Dog in the Oddysey
Another example of Romans and their relationship with dogs is the Oddysey, a story in which Oddyseus travels home to his wife, and "in the Odyssey is Argus, the faithful old sporting hound who recognized his master on his return and then died" (Thayer). This shows that not only does a king like Oddyseus have a hunting hound, he has a close enough relationship with him that Argus would recognize him after 20 years.
