Golden Apple Winner-- Parabens Professora Mel!
Melissa Stirling -Durrant, known affectionately by her students as Professora Mel, is a second grade Portuguese teacher at Lakeview Elementary School. Professora Mel is from Brasilia, Brazil. Although her father was British and her mother is Brazilian, her father never taught them English. She was raised with one brother and one sister who are both United States Army Veterans. Teaching has always been one of her passions and when she discovered she could teach in her own native language she began her career and has been teaching for 18 years.
She said, “I decided to become a teacher because of my aunt. She owns a school and since I was little I can remember playing school with her or going to work with her to help. I never saw myself doing anything different. When I am in my classroom I feel like something magical happens, and no matter how tired I am or if something bad happened before, I feel different. I feel charged! I care about my students and about their families.”
Her other passions include cooking, scuba diving, and dancing the samba and salsa. In her free time she enjoys being with her husband and their daughter, who is preparing to become a nun in an Orthodox Monastery.
Anyone who has spent time in Professora Mel’s classroom understands why she is a worthy recipient of this year’s Golden Apple Teacher of the Year award. Lakeview is lucky to have her.
