A Note From the Principal
Dear families,
It is hard to believe that it is December! The fall has flown by and has been filled with learning and community-building activities. Our kindergarteners have settled in and learned the routines of the school. They are making such great progress! First graders have been participating in the Global Read Aloud project, which is very cool. They are connecting to other schools around the nation! Second grade has done several cool projects related to their community, science experiments, and can often be seen using technology in the classroom. They really enjoy their flexible seating, as well! Third grade is glad to have Ms. Schneider back after maternity leave. They are adjusting well to new routines and have done several writing pieces. Fourth graders have read some exciting books and persevered through some difficult science experiments. They are using that same tenacity with long division! Fifth grade is working with Knowledge Master (STEM) materials, practicing staying fit, and use technology every day. Sixth graders are challenging themselves through writing and studying current events. Our Shimek community has enjoyed the fall supper, PTO tailgate, movie night, and the Shimek cafe! Thank you to all who have made this a fun, and fast, fall!
As we look ahead to the upcoming winter break, we wish you all a relaxing time with family and friends. If there is anything that you or your family needs, please do not hesitate to reach out. There are so many community resources that we can connect you with. And our Student Family Advocate is a fantastic liaison to these groups. In addition, we hope you can find opportunities to continue learning with your child. Whether it is reading a book together, cooking together, or going on a trip, these experiences hold valuable lessons for your child and can keep up their learning even though they are not at school.
Thank you for your continued support!

Dress Your Student for the Weather
Cold weather is upon us! Students are required to wear heavy coats, hats, and gloves when it is below 50 degrees. Jackets are required for 50-59 degree weather. When the weather is 60 degrees or above, students have the choice of what outerwear to use. Please send appropriate items to school with your child. If you are in need of additional winter items, please contact the main office.

Well Child Policy
If students are sent home ill from school, they are not allowed to attend school the next day. District policy states that students must be 24 hours fever or vomit free before returning to school. Please keep this in mind if your student becomes ill at home as well.
Winter Caroling
This year’s winter sing-along will look a little different. Ms. Pine will be teaching age-appropriate music and students will carol to one another around the school. This will take place during the students’ music classes. Videos will be shared by teachers and through the Shimek Facebook page. If you have any questions about the alternative format, please contact Ms. Pine or Ms. Bruening.
