Hello Lakeside Parents and Guardians,


We had an awesome week at Lakeside with several celebrations in recognition of the hard work our students and staff completed during the entire first semester. I am so proud and feel very fortunate to serve such great people in our community each day. I hope everyone has some time to enjoy family and friends over the course of the next two weeks. If you are traveling, please do so safely. We will certainly look forward to seeing your children return on Monday, January 6, 2020! Happy Holidays!

MSD of Warren Township Elementary School Visitation Procedures

Parents and visitors are encouraged to visit Lakeside Elementary. We are making a more concise effort in our visitor policy because the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our highest priority. All visitors must provide a government-issued ID to be scanned into the Raptor Visitor Management System. At the conclusion of all visits, please return to the main office to sign out. You can find more information about Raptor by visiting our website. School administration reserves the right to refuse visitation for anyone who does not comply with school visitation procedures.


Classroom Visitation

Classroom visits consist of observing teaching and learning in action. To protect instructional time and the activities taking place in the classroom, we ask that parents refrain from talking with the teacher to allow him/her to continue teaching. If you need to speak with a teacher, please follow the procedure for teacher visitation below. Procedures for classroom visits:

  • provide advanced notice to the teacher

  • must be on students emergency contact list

  • maximum visitors in a classroom of 2 parties

  • limited to a maximum of 30 minutes

  • classroom visitations during arrival and dismissal will not be allowed.

    • including walking students to class


Teacher Visitation

Meeting with your child’s teacher(s) is a valuable part of the education process. Procedures for teacher visitation:

  • schedule a meeting time with a teacher

  • must be a custodial parent or guardian


Lunch Visitation

If you are interested in eating lunch with your student at school, please follow these procedures:

  • eat in a designated area assigned by the school

  • only visitors who are on a students contacts list

  • other students will not be able to accompany your student

  • outside food/drink is permitted

  • at the conclusion of lunch, please return to the office.

Indianapolis Urban League - Read and Rise!

The Indianapolis Urban League is partnering with Warren Township to offer a program, Read and Rise, to our parent community. The foundation of the program is aimed at promoting reading and literacy development in the home. Their mission is to reinforce that parents are a child's first and most important teacher.

Warren will host three family literacy workshops as outlined below:

  • Thursday, November 21; 6:00-7:30 p.m. at ECC; Focus on Birth to Age 4

  • Tuesday, December 3; 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Lakeside; Focus on Kindergarten and 1st Grade, up to age 7

  • Tuesday, January 7; 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Lakeside; Focus on 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade, up to age 9

IUL teaches the workshops, provides how-to guides for parents and reading materials for children.

Tardy Bell

Just a reminder that our late bell rings at 8:05. Students that arrive at school after 8:05 are counted as Tardy. Every minute that a child is in school is important to her learning. When he/she is tardy, they face the challenge of trying to settle in and catch up with what other students are doing. He/She is behind and has to struggle to understand the material the teacher has already explained. Being late is detrimental to their learning, especially if it occurs on a consistent basis.

Cold Weather

It seems that Winter has arrived! As temperatures continue to drop please make sure that your student(s) have proper winter wear. If we can be of any assistance in helping make sure your student has access to a winter coat, hat, gloves, etc. please contact the school office at 317-532-2850 and ask to speak with our school counselor Mrs. Brown, or our Dean Mrs. Aldrich.


School Board and School policy encourage outdoor recess for our K-4 students whenever possible to encourage activity and social playtime. Our threshold for cold weather is 20 degrees. When the temperature falls below 20, students will have recess indoors. The 20 degree temperature would also include wind chill. In other words, if the temperature is 25 but the windchill falls below 20 degrees, students would remain indoors for recess. If students are not feeling well or a parent wants them to stay in for health reasons beyond 1-2 days, a doctor's note is required.

MSD WARREN TOWNSHIP'S HIGH ABILITY PROGRAM

Warren's High Ability Program is designed to meet the unique academic needs of gifted and talented students. The curriculum in these classes is differentiated and faster paced and students will be working above grade level if they qualify. As a district, we look at all students in grades 1, 4, 6 and 8 to see if they qualify for the following school year based on eligibility criteria. Parent recommendations are considered along with achievement scores when determining placement in high ability. More detailed identification information can be found here. If you would like to complete a recommendation for the broad based planning committee to consider you can do so here 2020-2021 High Ability Parent Recommendation Form The parent recommendation form will be open until January 31, 2020.

Counselor's Corner

My name is Kristen Mitchell and I am the school counselor here at Lakeside. I was teaching first grade here previously so you may recognize me. My role is to help add to your child's social, emotional, and academic success. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any concerns about your child's development in any of these areas. Elementary School Counselors provide education, prevention, and intervention activities through school-wide initiatives, classroom lessons, small groups and individual counseling. Counselors assist students in their academic, career and social/emotional development and provide support to students during times of transition or heightened stress. As a resource to staff and parents, counselors assist in identifying children's academic and social/emotional needs. Counselors may also provide referrals for additional community support services.


A typical day for our elementary school counselor might include the following:

  • Classroom lesson on social skills

  • An intervention assisting a small group of third-grade students with organizational skills

  • Collaboration with a grade-level team review of academic and behavioral data

  • Facilitating conflict resolution between students

  • Organizing career exploration activities for teachers to use in the classroom

  • Parent conference to address academic concerns

  • Small group intervention activity in anger management

  • Individual counseling for students dealing with emotions relating to stress or significant life events

NEW SCHOOL HOURS FOR 2019/2020 SCHOOL YEAR

Three Tier Busing - School Start Times

Beginning in the 2019-20 school year, Warren will be implementing a three tier transportation schedule. As a result, there are new school start times for our students. These changes will allow us to provide a safer and more efficient transportation experience for our students. More information will be available on our website and at registration in July.

High School (9-12) - 7:15AM - 2:20PM

Elementary School (K-4) - 8:05AM - 3:05PM

Intermediate/Middle School (5-8) - 8:55AM - 3:55PM

Warren Early Childhood Center & Renaissance - 8:55AM - 3:55PM

Additional Updates and Information

  • Lunch: Just a reminder that ALL students will receive FREE breakfast and Lunch this school year!
  • Birthday Treat Policy: All MSD Warren Schools have aligned their birthday celebration policies to the district’s wellness policy. As part of our efforts towards health and wellness, we follow a “no birthday treats” guideline.
  • Visitors Background Checks: Volunteers must have a valid background check on file in the front office as well as be included on a students emergency contact form for any type of school volunteer opportunities. If you would like to complete this process or have any questions please stop by our front office.
  • Student Absences: If your child is ill and will not be at school, please call the front office at 532-2850 to report his/her absence. Please call and report if your child will be arriving late to school due to a doctor’s appointment. Doing so helps us to know that your child is safe and with you.

While we love to celebrate, please remember that there is a “no birthday treats “ guideline. Also, note that no birthday invitations are allowed to be distributed at school. It is school policy.

CAR RIDERS/DAYCARE Student Drop-off/Pick-up Procedures

We ask that our parents follow these guidelines to ensure that every student has a safe arrival and dismissal:

All students will be required to be dropped off and picked up through the car rider line to maintain safety standards. Parking at the front and East end of the building and walking children to and from the entrances will not be allowed. We want to prevent children and adults walking through the path of cars or buses on the property at any time.

Staff members will be present outside beginning at 7:55 a.m. each morning for student drop-off. Please do not release your children until a staff member signals the beginning of our process. Students will not be counted tardy until 8:05 a.m. Our afternoon pick-up procedures will begin at 3:00 p.m. If you are in a hurry, you are encouraged to be at or near the front of the line. We will implement our dismissal procedures as quickly and safely as possible for all.

SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLICATIONS/ NEWS MEDIA USE FOR STUDENTS

The occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child’s school. This may include your child’s photo, your child’s name or your child’s work in district publications, newsletters, on school district websites, and in electronic/social media or in staff training videos. We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television, and radio) about your child’s achievements. We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/political purposes. However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify your child’s school office in writing that you do not want this type of information released.
