An Exciting New Project is Being Launched at Beth Israel Synagogue
In 2008, retired teacher, Pam Simon, and her grade 10 students developed a Holocaust Museum and educational centre at Q.E.C.V.I.
"We built and designed wooden memorial trees that honoured some of our local Holocaust survivors. We also made a documentary about Jewish history in Kingston as well as our survivors. This endeavour was very successful and allowed us to offer tours to LDSB students."
This project has found a new home at Beth Israel Synagogue. With a grant from the city, organizers were able to house five of the trees in shadow boxes that have been adhered to the walls of the Talmud Torah school, which is located on the lower level of the synagogue. Beth Israel library, also located on the same level, offers books on the Holocaust, as well as educational materials that Pam had collected during her years with LDSB.
Currently, docents are being trained to lead one-hour tours of the trees, a viewing of the documentary, along with future programs for students and teachers that will provide excellent instruction in Holocaust education.
The goal is to begin in-person and virtual tours in January 2023.
Please contact Andrea Barrow and Rachael McDonald for more information regarding scheduling the tours.
More Than focuses on dismantling labels and promoting self-esteem through STEM-related activities
We talked to kids, experts, and parents all over the country to learn about what the current barriers to success were. What we heard the most was that many kids learn to doubt themselves because of the fear of judgment or lack of acceptance. This insight drove us to create our new campaign, More Than. More Than focuses on dismantling labels and promoting self-esteem through STEM-related activities. At FIRST®, we want EVERY kid to believe in themselves and know that they are More Than the stereotypes or “boxes” society has placed them in. Together, we can inspire kids everywhere to take pride in being exactly who they are. Watch our PSA

Introducing our More Than Campaign
This week, we announced the launch of More Than, a campaign to dismantle labels for young people and promote self-discovery through STEM. The campaign launched with a new, emotive public service announcement (PSA) and a full-page ad in the New York Times calling for adults to encourage the young people in their life to engage in new opportunities that might seem outside their comfort zone. The More Than campaign is proudly supported by Bosch, Qualcomm Incorporated, and Raytheon Technologies.

FIRST® CEO: A teacher told me I wasn’t cut out for STEM. For too long, I believed her.
Chris Moore, CEO of FIRST, experienced the power and influence the words of authority figures have on children when a teacher in middle school discouraged him from exploring his potential in STEM and instead convinced him that he lacked the ability to succeed in these subjects. On Chalkbeat.org, he shared how that discouragement was the start of a 25-year journey of fighting for inclusion and representation in and beyond STEM.

Long-range plans that outline a year-long set of activities for teaching and learning Science and Technology.
This project has been a collaboration between The Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE), The Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario (STAO), and The Association for Computer Science Educators (ACSE).
OCTE is pleased to announce the launch of https://scitechontario.ca
The resources found on this website have been created to assist Ontario teachers with the implementation of the revised Elementary Science and Technology Curriculum 2022. The resources have all been created by Ontario Certified Teachers to provide examples of best practices in elementary science and technology.
These long-range plans outline a year-long set of activities for teaching and learning science and technology. Long-range plans are living documents that are revised as educators become increasingly aware of the abilities, strengths, needs and interests of their students. There are two models for these long-range plans to provide teachers with a variety of opportunities to create appropriate learning experiences for their students. In development are curriculum resources for each grade to support these long-range plans - to be released in November 2022.
Also in development are webinars and coding resources to further support implementation. Please stay tuned for more information.
