What’s Happening in 2nd Grade
Second grade officially began preparations this week for their first sacrament of reconciliation! We are learning to forgive one another as God forgives us. We want to be friends with God and each other. We continue to progress with our new Superkids reading program. Our teacher has already seen improvement in our fluency. In math, we have reviewed our addition and subtraction skills and are working on place value. We are so excited about this sacramental year and all the ways we will experience God’s love for us! ~Mrs. Vena

Cheers to Healthy Eating
No one likes to be forced to something, especially kids looking to establish their independence. This principal holds true for their food choices as well. Have you noticed the foods your children are choosing? I know this is a touchy subject, so I’m going to tip-toe across this territory and just offer a few suggestions about how to steer our children (and maybe our parents too?) toward healthier food choices.
Why am I bringing up nutrition? Well, I’m glad you asked. Food is fuel, and fuel provides the energy our children need to have healthy brains and bodies. With the afternoon crash in energy (and oftentimes emotions) we want to ensure your kiddos are receiving the best fuel possible at breakfast, snack time, and lunch. Now I know you might be thinking this is a lost cause. Take heart parents, guardians, grandparents, and anyone else in the support system. Try applying a few of these tips on your family’s food journey and report back.
1. Offer choices. No one likes to be forced into eating one specific thing. Offering kids choices between healthier options gives them the autonomy and independence they crave without sacrificing nutrition.
2. Let them make their own plate. With a few tries and an abundance of healthy options, eventually some will land on their plate. Small tweaks lead to big changes!
3. Introduce gateway foods to your children. How? Begin to add healthier options (fruits and veggies) to foods they already love!
4. Snack smarter. More whole food options and less processed foods is a great place to begin.
5. Include your kids in the kitchen. Especially where lunch and snack preparation are concerned. Have plenty of healthy options available for lunch prep and encourage fun in the kitchen when prepping for the next day.
6. Expose, don’t force. Give kids the options and information and let them explore at their own pace. It can take up to 15 tries before kids finally begin to enjoy healthier options.
7. Lead by example. If you want a healthy eater, be a healthy eater.
8. Final tip, add in before taking away.
The point is that kids function better physically, emotionally, academically, and socially if they avoid the spikes and crashes that accompany overly processed foods. Make food and nutrition fun and creative for yourself and your students. I’d love to hear how it goes!!
Cheers to healthy eating!
