Beacon Assessment
Our students in grades 3 through 8 will be completing the Beacon Assessment over the course of the next two weeks. This online assessment will test Math, ELA, Writing and Reading and provide teachers immediate feedback. The Diocese of Orlando is requiring this assessment of all schools as a way to determine if there are any academic gaps as a result of the distance learning that took place last Spring.
This standardized assessment must be taken on school campus. Ideally, we would like to have the data points of all of our students in grades 3-8, including those students learning from home. Virtual students are invited to come into the cafeteria on Wednesday, September 23rd from 8:30am until 10:30am to complete the assessment. The students can report directly to the cafeteria, wear a mask, and will be socially distanced. For those families on state funded scholarship, a formative assessment is required for scholarship students. This test satisfies that requirement. Virtual parents who choose not to have their child come in to take the assessment, please email Mrs. Haas directly at thaas@stjosephwhschool.org.
#AllInthistogether
A couple of reminders:
- Please, if your child, or anyone in your family, is awaiting test results for COVID, do NOT send your child(ren) to school until you receive negative results.
- Please be sure that your child arrives to school each day with a CLEAN mask.
- Some student masks are too large for their faces. If the mask is too big, it doesn't cover their face correctly and requires them to constantly touch their mask. During the coming long weekend, please consider purchasing child sized masks for your child. Fun fact: Some adults are wearing child sized masks as they fit better and are less cumbersome.
- When dropping your child(ren) off at morning care, please do not leave until you have confirmed that the temperature has been taken and the child enters morning care.
School Mass
Our first school mass will be on Wednesday, September 23rd. Only 1/3 of our students will be able to go to the church for mass. The remaining classes, and all of our virtual students, will participate in school liturgy virtually from their classrooms or their homes. We have placed the grade levels in three groups and will rotate which groups attend mass in the church. The groups are as follows:
Group A: 8th grade, 3rd grade, and kindergarten on 9/23
Group B: 7th grade, 4th grade and 2nd grade on 9/30
Group C: 6th grade, 5th grade and 1st grade on 10/7
Families are invited to join us for school mass on Wednesdays at 8:15am beginning 9/23. Please sign in at the school office and sit in the area designated for families/guests.
All students kindergarten through grade 8 should wear mass uniforms on Wednesdays, regardless of whether they are going to the church or not. Those classes that have PE on Wednesdays should wear PE uniforms UNLESS they are going to the church for mass. On those weeks, the students who have PE on Wednesdays should wear mass uniform.

Dismissal Times
Effective immediately, dismissal times are being adjusted to the following:
Elementary school (PreK through Grade 5) was supposed to be 2:45pm. New dismissal time for the remainder of the school year is 2:50pm. We will begin calling students from their classroom to the parking lot at 2:50pm. That means we will not begin calling students from their classroom to the parking lot until 2:50pm.
Middle school (grades 6-8) was originally scheduled to be 3:15pm. New dismissal time for the remainder of the year is 3:10pm. Middle school students will be called to the parking lot beginning at 3:10pm.
Afternoon dismissal ends at 3:35pm daily. Any students remaining in the classrooms at 3:35pm will be escorted to aftercare.
Morning Carline
Morning carline is going well. We are getting cars through the carline with plenty of time for students to be in homeroom before the tardy bell. However, we would like to eliminate cars being backed up on HWY 17 and need your help. Please consider assisting your child with unbuckling of his/her seatbelt and putting on face mask while awaiting a staff member to approach your car to take the student's temperature. Every minute counts!
Afternoon Carline
You guys are doing a great job! Thank you! Please be aware of new protocols this year for our afternoon carline:
- Cars are stopping just around the bend, near the basketball hoop. We are not moving cars all the way up to the top of the horseshoe by the tree like we've done in years past.
- Once cars have stopped in the circle, we are only loading the first five cars on the outside and the first five cars on the inside lanes. Please look for signs indicating the "Loading Zone." If you have not entered the loading zone, you will need to wait until cars move before expecting your child to be called to your car. Essentially, we are focusing on a very small group of cars at a time. The goal is to load them quickly and move cars.
- If you are directed to leave the carline before your child(ren) have been brought to the car, please move forward and park immediately to the left or the right. Please do not pull all the way up to the area that we used for parking cars in years past.
- If you are coming for a middle school student, remember that we will not begin to call for your child until 3:10pm.
- You may "Announce" on the app as soon as you enter the parking lot.
- Please have cartag visible throughout the time you are in the parking lot. Mr. Reilly needs to be able to see the number on the bottom of your cartag. Having the cartag on the dash often restricts visibility of the number.
- If anyone other than the primary parent is picking up the student, please be sure to "delegate" that individual to pick up your child. This needs to be done every time someone else picks up your child. You can set it to delegate daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or a specific day.
