Highlights from Week 14: Dec. 7-Dec. 11

Hello Families!
Wow, we have so many children using IXL at home! Keep up the good work. It was another busy week, with so much excitement for our Hour of Code on Friday. It was a great experience, and a BIG thank you to our parent volunteers who helped make it such a success.

In reading this week, many students changed groups, and we continued our work with blends. The students had fun engaging with reading in many different ways, as we opened all of our Daily 5 reading stations. We completed chapter 4 in math, and are ready to begin a new challenge with chapter 5.

Jack and Maia were great Top Dogs! They have passed the responsibilities on to Luke this week. He will do great!

Check out our classroom updates, and as always, be sure to contact me with any questions. Hope you're enjoying some family time this weekend.

Winter Party

This year our winter party will be a celebration of learning, as we have a mini multicultural fair which will bring our Heritage unit to a close on the morning of Dec. 18th. Each classroom will feature crafts, information, and activities from one country. Our classroom will share about Japan. No food will be served, but children will have fun crafts to take away from each country. Our Room Parents have been hard at work preparing for this fun event. If you are interested in volunteering to help, please let me know. Volunteers will remain in our classroom, helping with projects/activities while three other classes come to visit.

IXL: We've Completed 2,000 Math Problems!

Our school has subscribed to IXL which gives your child access to an unlimited number of practice questions, step-by-step explanations, engaging awards and certificates, easy-to-read progress reports, and much more. On Monday, your child will bring home a letter, user name, and password to use at home. Please let me know if you have any problems with this program. Enjoy!

Professional Devleopment Days, November 21 and 22

During the first 2 days of Thanksgiving Break, all LO teachers had the opportunity to attend a Professional Development conference. I attended many great workshops which included, Working with Dyslexic Students, Art to Enrich and Enjoy, Addressing Behavioral Issues in Students, Active Engagement Strategies for Students, Growth Mindset and the Flipped Classroom.

From these workshops, I have found some great new read alouds to share after the break. We started a new art project, inspired by the story, Mirette on the Highwire. I look forward to also using plickers as a new way for me to track student progress. I am grateful for this opportunity to grow as an educator.

Children can do our Hour of Code activities at home, please follow the link and experience all the fun.

Volunteer Opportunites

We are ready for volunteers to join us during our reading block from 9:50-11:30 daily. You can come once, weekly, or monthly, whatever is best for you. Follow the link below to sign up for a time that best fits your needs.

During this time, you can expect to support students at their seats, as they're working independently. On some days, there might also be classroom materials to prep (copies, cutting, filing and organizing)
