4th of July Activities
The 4th of July in Gooding will be filled with activities! Plan to enjoy fun events all over town, from Gooding Recreation District soccer to mud volleyball at Lion’s Park, and swimming at the East Park Pool which will be open from 1-5 PM. To top it all off there will be the fireworks display at the Middle School, which should be amazing this year! Kona Ice will be on hand to keep you cool, so see you on the fourth!
Summer Message from Chief Fisher
With summer in full swing and July 4th upon us, please remember to be careful with fire and fireworks. July 5th is the last legal day to sell or use any fireworks without a special permit. With the wet spring, there will be plenty of fuel for wildland fires. Please be cautious wherever you go, and remember, for home safety a well maintained fire barrier could save your home. In the city we may not think of this much, but excessive vegetation growth is a fire hazard. Weed control is a good measure of fire protection and is required within the city of Gooding. Help a neighbor with their weed problem if they are having troubles or may not know what to do to minimize them.
We are also well into the 100 deadliest days for driving. Every year, summer seems to yield the most traffic deaths of any other time. Exercise care, do not become an aggressive driver, and practice defensive driving. Above all else, please do not drink and drive, and watch out for and report those that do. The life you save may be your own or that of a family member or close friend.
Summer is also yard sale season which brings increased traffic to all of our neighborhoods. Residents are reminded that yard sales are limited to 4 each year and must be of normally obtained household items. Business sales are not allowed with the exception of those benefiting our local organizations, which must be at a place of business and not at private homes. Lastly, signs must be removed within 48 hours of the end of any yard sales.
Have a great summer and we will see you again in August as the fair season comes into full swing with the Gooding County Fair running the week of 12-17 August.
Summer Message from Fire Chief Covey
The Gooding Firemen’s Benefit Picnic went well. We served about 300 people. A big thanks to all that helped and showed up to take part in the festivity.
The Gooding County Fire Departments are starting a Special Operations Rescue Team (or SORT for short). Five Gooding firefighters just finished up a week long high angle rope rescue training in Twin Falls. We will be available for rope rescue, swift water rescue, basic search and rescue and (as soon as we can get it funded) SCUBA. Some of the training and equipment for this team was funded by Glanbia. We hope to get more funds from local industry to complete our training and purchase dive equipment.
The fire season has begun. Please be aware that if you are going to be doing any burning in the city you need a burn permit. They are free and you can obtain one from City Hall or the Fire Department. If you live outside city limits you must obtain a burn permit from IDL. These can be obtained by going to their website
See you at the fireworks which we will be setting off at the Middle School this year on the 4th around 10pm. Let’s have a safe July!! God Bless. Chief Covey
Veteran Plaques
CALLING ALL VETERANS!
We would like to get the word out that we need information from local veterans to engrave on a retirement plaque. Name, branch of service, rank, years served, location, distinguished accommodations, etc. We would then like to present these in November at the high school Veterans Day assembly.
What a wonderful idea to honor our heroes! Please either contact Tom Woodland, or you can drop off, carrier pigeon, mail, (or whatever it takes!) your information to City Hall, 308 5th Ave W. Gooding ID 83330 C/O Larry Bybee. If you have individual names or access to a list, let's help Tom and the Gooding High School out with this fantastic project. I know Tom would love to see this project grow so that every service member in the country could be recognized.
Please provide the information in writing so we can make sure he has all the details. You can also email Larry the information at: lbybee50@outlook.com
Operation Facelift
Operation Facelift has been around for a few years and receives its funding through the Idaho Department of Commerce, but it may be in jeopardy due to a lack of communities willing to participate. This year both the Gooding Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Gooding have taken on projects to help improve the look of our Main Street corridor. The chamber has purchased new banners that will be placed further south and north of town to emphasize the fact that the community of Gooding is more more than just the area from the tracks to Highway 26. The Rotary Club is working with Tom Woodland and the FAA to construct an entrance sign on the south end of town. The sign is unique in the fact that the artwork portion can be changed out to highlight different themes. Stayed tuned, hopefully we win this year’s Operation Facelift Challenge!
With the uncertainty of the program continuing it would be great to let the Department of Commerce know that we value the program, so if there are any businesses along Main Street that would like to have their building spruced up next year let us know by contacting Larry in the Public Works Department. The grant amount is usually around $750 total per community, but it depends on the overall number of communities that have joined in.
