AZ FAF$A Challenge
June 2020
Goal Progress
With a FAFSA completion rate of 44% as of June 12th, and with less than two weeks left for the state to reach its 52% FAFSA completion goal, Arizona will fall short despite statewide efforts. Last year, Arizona’s final FAFSA completion rate was 47%, and if the data continues on its current trajectory the state will end with a 45% FAFSA completion rate for the 2019-2020 school year. With an estimated 36,000 completed FAFSA's as of June 12th, FAFSA completion rates have been on the decline since mid-March. This is a national trend, with some states seeing year-over-year declines in FAFSA completion rates of more than 8% points. Arizona is one of eleven states to report a decrease of 2% or less in completed FAFSA's when compared to last year.
AZ FAF$A Challenge Winners
Last month, the Arizona FAF$A Challenge announced its 2019-2020 winners. The trophies were sent to the schools along with the laptops to award to 2 seniors who completed the FAFSA at each winning school. In addition to the trophies and laptops, 15 schools were awarded Outstanding FAFSA Performance certificates; each signed by the governor. An additional 91 schools were presented with an honorable mention certificate which recognized an increase in FAFSA completion rates by at least 5% when compared to last year.
FREE College and FAFSA Support Hotline
Our postsecondary partners ASU, Be A Leader Foundation, College Success Arizona and the Arizona College Access Network have launched a FREE telephone hotline to support students and families needing college advising this summer, or help from an expert on FAFSA or financial aid questions. This new hotline provides an additional layer of support to students and families in addition to other outreach programs and Ask Benji, the digital FAFSA assistant. Students and families will have the opportunity to speak with well-trained college advisers regarding the FAFSA, college applications, the enrollment process, and more!
The hotline is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
