Learning Through the Arts Best Prepares Students for Life
October UPDATE
LSE Families,
It is officially Fall! What a wonderful time of year! Please know that all of us at Locust Street are so grateful for you and your students. This challenging time of virtually learning seems to be going well overall. Thank you for working with us to make that happen.
On Tuesday, October 6 at 4:30 pm, the Board of Education will convene a special session in advance of its regularly scheduled monthly meeting to receive updated information from the administration on the district’s re-opening plan. The administration plans to make a formal recommendation at the October 12, 2020 Board of Education meeting. You can view all Board of Education meetings at https://www.cpsk12.org/cpstv .

News from PTA
The 2020 - 2021 school year has started off like no other. However, as we have started this interesting year together during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, please remember that your PTA is committed to positively impacting the lives of our children and families and supporting our phenomenal teachers. Though absolutely nothing about this time that we are living in feels very good because we– and the children we love – are having to make so many sacrifices and it feels difficult at times, it is important that you know that you are doing a good job!
We are closing in on one full month of virtual learning, and as a parent of a Locust Street Expressive Arts second grader, I just want to say…aren’t are teachers AMAZING??? The patience, the care, the attention to detail, the guidance for our young learners…I am just blown away. Though this way of learning is not ideal, we are all pushing through!
There are still so many unknowns about what this year will look like as we move forward and we all hope to be able to be back in seat sooner rather than later, but the one thing that we know will remain constant regardless of how we “do school” is the importance of our being there for our students, are teachers, and each other.
Remember when “Room Parents” were a thing? Yeah? Good! Because there is no better time to bring that role back and better than ever before! Our teachers and our families would benefit greatly from having dedicated room parents assigned to help each classroom teacher, student and family navigate this school year. So you know what that means…WE NEED YOU!
We would like to recruit room parents per classroom/pod to provide assistance throughout this academic year. What does that entail you ask? Let me outline a few things:
- Serving as an assistant to our teachers when volunteers/supplies are needed
- Serving as a liaison for families in the classroom who have questions/need support/guidance. You will not have to know it all, but be willing to gather resources and/or point in the right direction!
- Organizing classroom celebrations
- Help with reminders or important classroom activities/needs
- Other duties as assigned (remember this vague line on your first job description)!
As I start the first year as your PTA Co-President with Robert Gaskin, I want you to know that I am looking forward to working with and supporting you, our teachers, and amazing staff and our pretty awesome Principal, Mrs. Julia Coggins. Our teachers have proven that no pandemic will hold them back from providing an excellent learning experience for our children, and for that we say THANK YOU.
I encourage each and every one of you to become a part of our team! You can support the Locust Street Expressive Arts PTA by:
- Becoming a PTA member: sign-ups are now online. By becoming a member, you will receive voting rights at PTA meetings
- Volunteering: share your talents with our school. By getting involved, you’ll be part of the solution, helping to make positive change.
- Donating: Provide resources and time
Here at Locust Street Expressive Arts we have an amazing community of students, parents, teachers and staff. Thank you for all that you do!
Let’s have a great year!
Sincerely,
Nikki McGruder, Locust Street Expressive Arts PTA Co-President 2020-2021
Grab-and-Go Meal Route Changes
Dear CPS Families:
Because we're always looking to make improvements and adjusting to meet the needs of our families, we've made some updates to our Grab-and-Go meal routes.
The changes begin on October 1.
You can view the route list and the changes on our website at https://www.cpsk12.org/grabandgo. A location map is also available on our website.
Our grab-and-go meal delivery for students began September 8, 2020. Buses run multiple stop routes Monday-Friday according to the school district calendar. Stops last a maximum of 15 minutes. Stops are not school specific, but rather designed regionally to include as many high-need areas as possible. Please find the stop closest to you and go there with your student at the designated time.
Students ages 2-18 can obtain a meal. Adults may pick up meals for students who are unable to do so. A student number is not required for each student meal set that is obtained. If a child is not enrolled at CPS, we will need a know the child’s name, and parent/guardian name and contact information. We ask that you practice social distancing while at the stop. Both breakfast and lunch will be packed as a Grab-and-Go bag. Students may select a sack meal that includes breakfast and lunch, one milk and a fruit and/or vegetable. Meals contain some perishable and some non-perishable items. Please adhere to disposal and refrigeration instructions for perishable items.
Thank you.

Bus Information from STA
We have made a few changes to bus riding expectations in order to maximize safety of our students when they do return to in-person hybrid learning. Please find those expectations listed here:
- All students and drivers are expected to wear a mask while on the bus.
- 1 student per seat {siblings may sit together in the same seat}
- The front row will remain vacant. These seats will be used for the drivers child and/or students who need to be moved because of possible sickness symptoms and/or the need to move a student due to behavior issues.
- All students will have assigned seats. This is necessary for the County Health Dept to conduct tracking if necessary.
