Family Read-Aloud

Machias Family Read-Aloud—

What is it?

Since 2008, Machias Elementary School and the Machias PTG have selected and provided a chapter book for every Machias family to read aloud at home and enjoy with the Machias community.

Once again, we invite you and your family to join us in our annual “Family Read-Aloud Month.” Every Machias family received a children’s chapter book as a gift on October 4 to read aloud together during October. We hope this year’s book, a best-selling, Newbery award winning book, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin, will be a popular story for our families, including readers of all ages.

At Machias,

our hope is that Family Read-Aloud Month

will help parents set aside time to

—and we sincerely hope your family has fun reading together!

Possible transportation impacts

The district is preparing for the possible impact that our regional and state-wide labor shortage may have upon our bus driver workforce. The possible shortage combined with normal absences due to illness and personal leave could create a situation where bus routes would have to be altered.

Should we learn of an instance where we are unable to drive a route, or a specific route pick-up and drop-off times are delayed, the school district or your school will contact impacted families as soon as we are able through our School Messenger communication system (phone and email).

It is difficult to give a warning, not knowing if a situation is going to occur, or even when it could occur. However, we deemed it necessary to share the concerns as we plan for all possible scenarios in the future. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Please know we are actively training and recruiting bus drivers and have several individuals in that process who will soon be well trained to transport our students.

If you or someone you know would be interested in becoming a bus driver, please have them contact us at 360-563-3525. We are currently paying $25.47 per hour (paid training available) plus bonus.

Do you have a bachelor's degree? Be a substitute teacher!

The Snohomish School District is hiring emergency substitute teachers. Did you know you can become and emergency substitute if you hold a bachelor’s degree or higher? This position $185 to $260 per day (depends on duration of assignment) applicant must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and must pass STEDI subskills test.

Contact Holli Fedewa in Human Resource Services/Guest Teaching for more information at 360-563-7247.

Bus Route Information

Please use our eLink/Versatrans online tool to find your student’s eligibility for bus service, Individual student bus routes and schedules can currently be accessed through eLink/Versatrans.

  • Login: (student 7 digit ID# with 0 ) Example 0911111
  • Password: (8-digit birthdate-no spaces) Example 02222021

Posted bus routes and pick-up and drop-off times are approximate. Please remember that traffic, weather and other unforeseen circumstances may cause some routes to be early or delayed. Also, as students choose not to ride or to ride the bus during the school year, pick-up and drop-off times are adjusted. For example, the elimination of just one bus stop (because students no longer ride or are absent from stop on a particular day) can affect a route by 2-3 minutes. It is recommended that parents and students arrive at their bus stops at least 5 minutes prior to the published times.

It is our district’s practice that kindergarteners will not be let off the bus unless the student’s parent/guardian (or designated adult) is at the bus stop at the time of student drop-off. Kindergarteners whose parent is not at the bus stop will be returned to the student’s elementary school where the parent (or emergency contact) will be called for student pick-up.

Please continue to check eLink/Versatrans on a regular basis as student schedules and routes may be adjusted through the first few weeks of school. If you notice an issue with your child’s transportation information, parent/guardian transportation assistance is currently available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. by calling 360-563-3525 or emailing
