Welcome to the FMS EXPLO Newsletter!
Ms. Glynn and Ms. Neudecker
6th Grade band has just now gotten new sheet music. We are so excited to get them playing "real" music instead of music out of the book. This new music has introduced new concepts and has really challenged that ability of these young players and they are rising to the challenge. Students have also been working on more complex rhythms and and counting, that includes 16th notes and 8th rests. Please make sure that you plan to attend the Parade of Bands concert that will be help March 1 in the High School gym! More detailed information will be sent home closer to the concert.
7th Grade Band is also starting something new this semester. Everyone has started book two in the Essential Elements series and we are very excited! If you have not done so already, please send money with your child to purchase you book from us. The brass and woodwind books are $8.00 and the percussion books are $15.00. Students just recently finished learning to construct, write and play ALL 12 major scales. Ms. Neudecker and I are very pleased with the progress that ALL students made during this unit! Also, a huge shout out to the 7th grade band who had EVERY SINGLE person turn in their rhythm sheet last week! That is a huge accomplishment that no other class has met so far this year! Please plan to attend out Parade of Bands concert on March 1 in the High School gym. More information will be sent home closer to the concert.
8th Grade Band is starting on our contest music for CMU Music Festival on March 4. I am very excited that the students have come back ready to work, and our ensemble sound is rockin'! Make sure that your students are practicing their solo music and band music at home. The parade of bands concert will be on March 1 in the High School gym. Next week we are working polishing contest music. I sent an email home this week about going to Central Methodist University for a band clinic on February 23. We will leave the middle school at 12:15 and return at 4:30, please arrange to have your child picked up at the middle school at that time. They will need to wear their polos and khakis that day to school. I am very pleased with how hard this group has worked this far and I cannot wait to see how they perform at contest on March 4, 2016 at Central Methodist University! Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend, we are so excited to see all of you there supporting our students. A more detailed schedule will be sent home as soon as I have schedules for performances from the University.
The end of term is among us, multiple emails have been sent out for missing assignments. Please make sure that your students are getting their rhythm sheets turned in. ALL late work is due by Monday, or it will continue to be a zero in the grade book.
The Cherrydale fundraiser orders will be available to pick up at the Parade of Bands concert on March 1 in the High School gym.
As always, if you ever have any questions please feel free to contact Ms. Glynn or Ms. Neudecker at sglynn@fulton58.org or kneudecker@fulton58.org. Thank you for your continued support!

The Hornet Singers are continuing to grow as musicians as we build our sight-reading skills and expand our vocabulary...in Latin! We've been learning a lot and are very excited for Central Methodist University's Music Festival coming up the first Friday in March. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to time.
Solo and small ensemble lessons have started and I can not wait for these kiddos to show off their talents for each other next Tuesday, February 23rd at the Vocal Showcase. Thanks to parents and students for being so great about rescheduling. Such great things happening in Hornet Singers!
8th grade Arts Alive have now rotated on to their new classes for the last 2 terms of the year...good luck kiddos!

Hornet Pride Choir (7th grade) is doing great work in preparation for our upcoming contest! Our contest repertoire: "Gloria Deo!", and " Drinking Gourd", is challenging, but we are making excellent progress. Singers are working hard, and having a great time! Recordings that may be helpful for practice are posted on our Google Classroom.
6th grade Arts Alive is almost over, and we're sharing our musical artist presentations this week! Students selected musicians to research and teach their classmates about. We have heard projects about Conway Twitty, Selena Gomez, One Direction, 21 Pilots, and Fetty Wap, just to name a few. Students have been doing great work!
7th grade Arts Alive are sharing their Music Genre projects. Students selected a genre of popular music, as well as two subgenres, to research. This project includes profiles of 6 musicians or groups. These presentations have been informative, and fun. We've had the opportunity to hear lots of popular music!
As we near the end of this Arts Alive rotation, I want to let you know that this has been a wonderful group of young people. I've enjoyed getting to know each of them, and hope we get to work together again soon!

The 8th grade students enrolled in Computer Applications continued with their goal setting along with choosing strategies to help them reach their goals. This is a year long process, increasing 3 wpm each month. For February our benchmark goal is 31 wpm with 90% accuracy for the month.
7th and 8th grade Computer Applications students will begin a video production unit using photographs and video clips of various FMS activities throughout the school year. This unit will consist of making video trailers (using templates) and later creating their own videos that will include music, video clips, captions, and pictures. We will use the imovie application to make our videos.
6th grade students, along with the "wheel" 7th and 8th grade classes ended the 4th term on Thursday, and moved on to their last rotation on Friday. They spent their last day with some fun word play. (see pictures below) I enjoyed having these kids in computer class!
Welcome to the new students enrolled in computer class for the 5th and 6th terms! New students to computer class dealt with login issues and personalized their computers on Friday. These students will begin work on typingtraining.com on Monday. 6th graders will also learn the individual keys on the keyboard this week, with an assessment on Thursday. 7th and 8th graders will review the keyboard and show what they know on Thursday or Friday (depending whether they are enrolled on an A or B day).
All computer students will participate in an "Hour of Code, which is a STEM activity. See the pictures below of 8th graders working on their Tynker coding challenge.
