Surfside Shark Bites
Week of August 14-18, 2023
A note From Principal Frandsen
It's been a great week at Surfside. Overall, students have done an excellent job at getting to school on time and completing their assignments. We are finding that this year's students are particularly respectful, pleasant, and they have a great sense of humor. All of this makes for a great place to learn.
As we move into the year, we will continue to build both students’ academic capacity as well as their soft skills in preparation for the following grade levels and ultimately for life after high school. Surfside’s core values include Self-Direction, Effective Communication, and Accountable citizenship. These values, as captured in our acronym, S.E.A., are embedded in our daily work and interactions with students.
Please help us advance these values in your student by ensuring that they come to school on time, complete their assignments, and communicate clearly and frequently with their teachers. One of the best first steps is to carefully review the class syllabus for each course with your student to better understand the expectations and supports available to them. If you have questions about your child and/or their progress, please contact your student's teacher!
We are grateful you are at Surfside!

School Site Council
The School Site Council (SSC) is comprised of 12 members: six school team members and six community members. Staff members include the school principal, one non-teaching staff member, and four teachers. Other members include a combination of parents/guardians, students, and/or community members. The SCC develops and oversees Surfside's School Plan for Student Achievement, which includes the planned actions and expenditures to support student outcomes and overall performance. The School Plan aligns with the actions included in the District's Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which lays out goals for the entire district.

Shark Nibbles - Surfside Elementary K-5 News
We hope all families have been able to pick up their first unit and have started getting back into a school routine. We love how each family in Independent Study has the freedom to create a school schedule that works best for their unique learner.
We have had some questions on finding resources for the new math curriculum within the iReady platform, as well other general iReady questions for the beginning of the year. Thank you to the parents who have helped us troubleshoot areas of confusion.
iReady Helpful Tips-
You must access iReady from the Rapid Identity/student dashboard.
You will not be able to login through iReady Connect, because Oceanside Unified uses a Single Sign-on Serve.
If you need any help with your students username/password for Rapid Identity, please email your Supervising Teacher. K-2 passwords are all defaulted to your students birthday in MMDDYYYY format.
You will not see any assignments/lessons until after the first Diagnostic. The lessons you will see after the diagnostic will be personalized for your student.
At any time, however, you can find all the digital lessons, videos etc, by clicking “Math", and then the icon at the bottom of the screen that says “bookshelf.”
The Diagnostic window opens on Monday, August 21, 2023. The Diagnostics MUST be carefully completed by September 15, 2023. Please plan to work on the Diagnostics for 20-30 minutes daily. Having students work on their Diagnostics for a small prescribed amount of time daily encourages accurate results and helps students avoid Diagnostic fatigue. For more information on the Diagnostics, please refer to the parent guide.
Please don’t forget to join your Google Classroom! Once in Rapid Identity, click on the green/yellow GC icon. You should see a small picture of the correct grade level Google Classroom- simply click “join.” Within the GC main feed you will find the virtual meeting times (including the meeting link,) links to the parent resource page, and a link to the Parent Guide.
Some work will be due by 9/8/23. Work turn in dates are very important as we need to have evidence that work was completed for attendance credit and progress tracking. You do not need to turn in a full unit.
Virtual Classes begin on 8/21/23. Optional Independent Study Drop-in Sessions begin 8/28/23. Please see the Parent Guide or last week’s Shark Bites for more information.
We are looking forward to a year of support and collaboration with all our K-5th families.
All the Best,
Kelly Crouthamel & Anthony Madsen, your K-5th Supervising Teachers

OUSD messages families using a platform called Blackboard Communications. This allows teachers and staff to send an email, text or voice message directly to the email address or phone number you have listed in Aeries. It’s important that all the adults in your student’s life have updated contact information in Aeries so everyone can receive important messages from your student’s school.
You no longer need to download any third party apps to receive messages from OUSD. The only district supported app that families should download is the OUSD app.Check your email or spam folder. Your login and password for the app have been sent from
firstname.lastname@example.org to the email you have in Aeries.
