What's So Great About PHES, Anyway?
This week: Our Custodians
In case you missed it, this past Friday was Custodian Appreciation Day. While I can't help but be grateful every day for Mr. Carter and Mrs. Cardwell, it was nice to be able to recognize the work they do in celebration on Friday.
Mr. Carter is one of the first PHES employees I met, and he's the one I usually see first every day when I arrive at school. He always greets me (and everyone else) with a smile and a light-hearted pleasantry. He is the heart of the cafeteria - not only does he help the amazing kitchen team feed 800 students every day by grade level with 5 minutes to clean between groups, he goes out of his way to make every student smile. He has a special place in his heart for the students with the greatest needs and he pays careful attention to making sure they feel loved. Our teachers know Mr. Carter will be there to support them when the ask. He's always happy to help and doesn't give you the impression that you are burdening him by asking.
Mrs. Cardwell is one of the hardest working people I have ever met. She dresses for success, letting you know that she takes her job very seriously. She is usually moving from classroom to classroom with a big smile on her face. This summer she and her son were delivering "Back to School" treats for everyone on campus. What custodian does that??? Mrs. Cardwell does.
We sure love Mr. Carter and Mrs. Cardwell. We hope they feel appreciated and supported at Providence Hall. Thank you all for the many gifts and cards you send with your children to show your appreciation.

A Message from Nurse Brown 🩺 & Mr. Fry
Hey Providence Hall Families! We are happy to report that the number COVID cases at PHES is down significantly from just a few weeks ago (for details see the COVID-19 Dashboard at our website).
With that in mind, we are not "out of the woods", and must take care to prevent the spread and avoid a "test to stay" scenario. Our school nurse, Ms. Staci Brown, works tirelessly to comply with County healthy guidelines. Please read the following message from Nurse Brown:
Hello parents! Just a few reminders. Please verify that your email address listed in skyward is current and accurate. I’m getting some quarantine notifications coming back to me “undeliverable”.
If your student is displaying any cold/flu symptoms, please keep them home until the symptoms have resolved or they test negative for Covid.
If anyone that resides in your house is ill and awaiting test results, please do not send your students to school. Wait until those results come back. If they are negative, the student may come to school. If they test positive, everyone should quarantine at home away from the positive person. Home exposures are handled differently than school exposures.
We follow the SL Co Health Department guidelines for Covid 19. We’d like to share with you how the contact tracing process works.
If a student tests positive, we are notified by either the Health Department, or you, the parent. We are required to contact trace for 48 hours prior to when the symptoms developed or the date of the positive test (whichever occurred first).
For example, If your student has mild cold symptoms on Wednesday and they attend school all week, we will contact trace Monday through Friday of that week and anyone that your student was within 6 feet of for more than 15 minutes, will now be quarantined for 10 days. This is why we urge you to keep your students home if they are sick. Contact tracing potentially impacts dozens of other students and their families.
Lastly, when you receive a quarantine notification letter, please read it thoroughly and let me or Mr. Fry know if you have questions or concerns.
Thank you!

Mapu's Message from the Kitchen 🧑🏽🍳
The Nutrition Department would like to give families a little bit of insight into the happenings here at Providence Hall in regards to school meals. We are starting to feel the effects of the “break in the supply chain” due to Covid and labor issues. I am sure you have seen mention of this situation on the local or national news. There were quite a few manufacturers, last year that due to Covid, had to either make significant staff cuts or had to shut down completely.
Now that manufacturers are back up and running, they are experiencing a labor shortage. As a result of this shortage, they are not able to keep up with the amount of food requested, which has increased, due to the increase of student participation with meals being offered for free.
Manufacturers are also experiencing a driver shortage. They are unable to get their products to the distributors in a timely manner. We have also learned that manufacturers are sending a limited supply of products to distributors. When this happens, it becomes a “first come first serve” type of situation as to who will get that product.
As a result of this, we may not be able to receive ALL the items we have ordered and we will have to make adjustments to the menus based on what we are able to receive from our distributor.
We will try to maintain the consistency of serving the same items at all three locations.
There may be situations that one of the three schools will need to serve a different meal due to availability.
We know this is often frustrating for our families, and we want you to know we are doing all we can to remain consistent with our meal offerings each week. Thank you for your patience as the nation works to get back to normal production of products.
If you have any questions about the menu or ANYTHING food-related, please reach out to:
Mapu Weiss, mweiss@providencehall.com or 801-72-8260 ext. 3205.
I would be happy to have a conversation about any of your concerns.
Online order form for October 8th Focus Friday is now available on the Providence Hall website under the Nutrition tab. The order form will be available until October 3rd
