School Board Meeting Adjustments
The Beaverton School Board will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, December 16, 2019. Please see the agenda for details and note the adjustments in public participation. The Board will reserve 45 minutes for public comment at 6:55 p.m. If necessary, there will be 15 minutes set aside for additional public comment at the end of the meeting. This change has been made to honor the Board’s longstanding commitment to ample public participation, while balancing the need to conduct the business of the School Board.
In addition to public participation time during Board meetings, the Board is committed to engaging members of the community on an ongoing basis regarding community values about education during times other than the Board’s regular meetings. Visit the School Board webpage to learn more about how to contact Board members.
Save the Date: Early Learning documentary No Small Matter
Ninety percent of brain development happens in the first five years of life. Our state ranks 46th in the nation for providing early childhood education services to 3-5-year-olds, despite our high rates of poverty and an increase in the number of children entering kindergarten having already experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s). This is why the state of Oregon and the Beaverton School District are working to change these statistics.
As a District, we have implemented a Pre-K program in seven of our 34 elementary schools. Our goal is to create access for children and families, who have been historically marginalized by our early learning opportunities.

Following the film, members of the BSD Early Learning Team will share our vision for our youngest BSD learners.
Why, when the importance of quality early care and education is so widely accepted, do we continue to fail so many?
No Small Matter is a feature-length documentary film and national engagement campaign that brings public attention to this vital question by sharing powerful stories and stunning truths about the human capacity for early intelligence and the potential for quality early care and education to benefit America’s social and economic future. This multifaceted project reveals how our country is raising its youngest citizens, why making the most of this time in their lives is so crucial, and most importantly, what we can do to change the perception of when learning begins. The first major theatrical documentary to tackle this topic, No Small Matter is designed to kick-start the public conversation about early care and education. The ultimate goal: to produce an entertaining, accessible, and inspiring film that redefines the audience’s understanding of the issue and helps drive it to the top of the political agenda. Or, as one advocate put it, “not just to make a documentary about early childhood education, but to make the documentary about early childhood education.”

Safe Routes to School Update: Winter Walk and Bike Preparation
With colder winter weather, children spend less time playing outside. A nice brisk walk or bike ride to school will help achieve their recommended 60 minutes of moderate exercise every day. With some simple preparation your children can still be active and stay safe and warm during winter.
Wear a raincoat or poncho, and/or carry an umbrella.
Carry a plastic bag to store wet gear during the day.
Wear gloves and waterproof shoes. Carry (or store at school) extra shoes and socks to change into.
Find an under-cover area to park your bike if possible. If not, bring a plastic bag to cover the seat. We also have bike seat covers if any parent groups would like to provide some at the school for children riding bikes this winter.
Wear reflective gear and/or bright colors and use a light on your bicycle.
Only walk or bike in the rain if you’re comfortable, as roads are slick and visibility may be reduced. Always remember to stop at the curb or edge of the street, look in all directions before crossing and keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.
