Genetic Engineering
Genetic Mutations and Modifications
Genetic Engineering What is it?
Genetic Engineering, commonly referred to as GE uses scientific methods, procedures, and technologies that intentionally manipulate genetic material in order to alter the hereditary traits of a cell, organism or population to produce a desired outcome.
Relevance of Issue
In terms of Genetic Engineering's relevance to genetic mutations we explore the outcomes and risks of genetic engineering that could lead to genetic mutations. genetic Engineering involves altering DNA in a simple organism such as a bacterium in order to get the bacteria to produce a protein that it ordinarily would not be produced naturally. this is done by snipping open a section of the bacterial DNA and inserting a gene from another organism. this technique is known as gene splicing and it is often accomplished by inserting a new gene in a virus and then infecting the bacteria with the virus. They can do that by using the host cell's replication, transcription and translation mechanisms to create that viral protein. Thus forming genetic mutations.
Ethical Issues
The ethical issue presented here is the notion ‘is it right to tamper with the make-up of a person in order to match the desired image in our minds’. There are many conflicting arguments for and against genetic engineering that portray either a world of genetic discrimination to a world that would transcend racism.
Main arguments against GE
1. Limits children’s’ autonomy and thus their destinies
- If parents give their child blue eyes instead of brown eyes, tall instead of medium, passive over aggressive personality, their choices will have a direct, lifelong effect on me. Child has no say
3. Vast social and genetic inequalities where the poor cannot afford the engineering services so by default their child has a disadvantage to others.
4. Religious views
- God has made each of us out of love and goodness and that we are a reflection of this. Therefore it would mean going against God’s will, and against his plan.
Main arguments for GE
1. Creates a humanity that can remove discrimination and transcend racism.
- Being blue eyed and blond haired loses its racially exclusive undertones. It encourages racial harmony and diversity.
3. Able to eliminate conditions such as Down syndrome and other hereditary conditions; we can build our immune systems to be able to live better, more fulfilling longer lives.
