Term 1 Week 10 Monday 3rd April 2023
Principals Message
Kia ora whanau
As the term comes to an end I can’t help but think about where the time went. The start of the term was very disrupted but in true Kokopu Style, the students and teachers jumped straight back into learning.
Over the last two weeks, we have enjoyed another successful Triathlon, and mulching day and on Wednesday we will hold our summer sports tuakana teina house day.
PB4L. We are very excited to have passed out PB4L SET assessment last week. We have graduated to Tier Two which means we have made a positive change in our behaviour program. We have noticed a big drop in undesirable behaviour and a more positive conflict resolution mentality in our students. A big part of this achievement has been having strong school values, tuakana teina, collecting behaviour data and peer mediators. A big thank you to Anna Boaz who drives this in our school.
The school council was very excited to buy and receive their new scooters purchased from their dress-up day fundraiser. They will be unpacking and putting them together early this week ready for other students to use.
School Vision. The BOT, teachers and students have started to relook at our school vision statement, and if it still reflects who we are and what we want to be going forward as a school. Next term parents and caregivers will be invited to contribute to this review and give their thoughts on looking to the future and what we want our kids to achieve. In the meantime, you could have a look at our current Vision Statement here. www.kokopu.school.nz/visionandvalues
Over the last few weeks, I have been in contact with some of the Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa schools and have heard and seen the plight they are in. Some are in community halls others relocated to council buildings. They are extremely worried about their schools’ futures with some unlikely to return to their current sights.
Cyclone Affected Schools
As much of the media focus has disappeared, principals have said that they are feeling a bit forgotten. So, as a school, I thought it would be nice to put together a couple of small care packages for a few of the schools, Puketapu School, Eskdale School and Tinui School. The kids have already started to write some letters and cards and we will pop in a few treats for the teachers too. If you would like to contribute a few treats please feel free to drop them into the office.
Property. Over the holidays the window joinery in rooms 1,2 and the whanau room are going to be replaced. We ask that if you are on the school site please be mindful of the contractors and stay clear of the work areas.
We have lots of exciting learning to look forward to next term. Our topic studies will be dinosaurs and our country studies will be the Mediterranean. See Key Dates for more!

Happy Easter and ANZAC Commemoration
The staff would like to wish you all a Happy Easter and safe holiday break. See you back at school on Monday 24th April when we will have a special ANZAC commemoration where the children lay their wreath, share poppies, have a reading and haka. Parents are most welcome to join us at 9am. Tuesday 25th April is ANZAC day, so there will be no school.
Plant Care Day
The staff would like to thank the children and Lucinda for helping with mulching around our trees on the top field. The children worked well bucketing woodchip and the effect is fantastic. This will keep the weeds down and give the trees a great growing environment. A huge thanks to Ms Boaz for organising this marvellous effort!

Kokopu School - Teacher Aide Job Position 2023
12 hours per week Fixed Term
Closing Date Friday 28th of May 2023.
Starting Mid Term 2.
We are seeking a person to join our wonderful teacher aide team and work one-on-one with one of our amazing learning support students.
Applicants should have excellent communication skills, show initiative, be adaptable, patient, and show a relational approach to working with students who have extra needs.
Teacher aide or a history of working with children is an advantage.
Please follow the link below for more information.
After School Carer Position
We have a casual vacancy for an after school carer to assist Loida on days when our numbers exceed our limit. If you are interested in the position, please contact the school office for more information.
Please let us know if your child is attending ASC before 12pm on the day of care required. It is preferable if you can email the days your child will be needing ASC at the beginning of the week if you know your schedule.
REMINDERS
Friday Assembly. On Friday afternoon we have a sharing assembly at 2.30pm for the whole school. Parents are welcome to come along and see what the children have to share.
School Office. Vicki is in the office on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Bexs is in the office on Wednesday and Friday mornings until 11.35am.
Drink Bottles. Our water issues have be rectified but it would be good to send your child with a drink bottle full of water each day.
Hats. Please remember this term all children will be required to wear a hat when outdoors.
Carpark and gate. Please come to the gate in the carpark to collect your children at the end of the day. We do not want children walking through the carpark without an adult as it is unsafe with the amount of cars and limited parking. We have a teacher on duty at the gate each day to supervise. Can we ask parents and visitors to make sure they close the gates if you use them? We have a few children that may be prone to walking out an open gate. Thank you. Please don't park by the entrance gate or teachers carpark area. Also please avoid parking by the letterbox at the front of the school. This is a dangerous area with several close calls lately.
- Absences. A reminder that it is important to contact the school before 9.30am when your child will be absent. You can either phone, email or let us know via our Skool Loop app. We need to know where your children are so we know they are safe and can mark them correctly on the roll. See details in this newsletter on how to download our Skool Loop App.
- Iceblock Sales. Ice Blocks are for sale again to raise funds for the school. Many children who come to school with $2 like to buy their friend an ice block. Please could you send a note to say they are allowed to do this? The Room 6 children do ask but a note would be easier for them.
