WEEK ENDING IN 04/01/2022
Dear OSES Families,
Thank you to all the people who participated in our Climate Survey. Below is a quick summary of the results.
92% of families feel OSES has effectively handled the COVID pandemic thus far.
73% of families are supportive of removing the mask requirement for staff members.
The top three phrases that parents hear teachers say to students are: we will be working on, explain your work, and I am interested in your thinking.
The top three phrases that best describe what your child is doing at school are: listening to teacher, working with others, and writing.
The top three words to describe your interactions with staff is: respectful, supportive, and helpful.
A student survey will be taken later in the school year and the results shared.

SCHOOL NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS
APRIL CALENDAR
FUTURE DOCTOR DAY- APRIL 15TH
SNMA Medical Students and Physicians will be visiting 4th and 5th graders at the Orlando Elementary School to answer their questions and show them what it's like to be in medicine! There will be a Future Doctor panel on Zoom in the afternoon that all of our K-12 students can participate and ask questions. The teachers will submit the questions ahead of time so the panelists can answer them live or on social media.
OSES LEADERSHIP ACADEMY-On going
Leadership Academy is a tradition at Orlando Science Technology Campus that helps prepare our students for upcoming state testing. Beginning the end of January, students in 3rd-6th grade are invited to attend where he/she will receive additional support for the upcoming FSA. On each of the designated sessions, students will get more in-depth instruction with the standards they are struggling with and take several practice tests/quizzes in preparation for the FSA.
This year for Leadership Academy students will have two options for students to attend:
Tuesday & Thursday OR Saturday.
Students will not be able to attend both sessions.
Hours for the Tuesday & Thursday session are 4:00 pm-6:00 pm. Snacks will be provided. Students MUST be picked up by 6:00 pm. To sign up for the Tuesday and Thursday Leadership Academy sessions, go to this link.
Hours for the Saturday session are 9:00 am-12:00 pm. A lunch and snacks are provided. Students MUST be picked up by 12:00 pm. To sign up for the Saturday Leadership Academy sessions, go to this link.
Below is the Leadership Academy waiver that must be filled out prior to student's attendance.

KINDERGARTEN
This week in Social Studies we are connecting jobs in the community to needs and wants! Students will understand that people work at jobs in the community to help others and to earn money. They can then buy the things they need and want. In Science students will continue to learn about pushes and pulls with some hands on activities!
Please remember to label ALL student belongings: JACKETS, water bottles, lunchboxes etc. Thank you!
Learning about Ramadan making Fanusa with Nour parents that are from Egypt.
We also had some fun April Fools Treats Jello Juices and Dough nut seeds.
We finished our Farm week milking cows!!!

Ms. Placencia’s Class learned about goods and services this week. They each created their very own goods road or service street.
In science, they collaborated on identifying the differences between parents and their offspring.

TESTING CORNER
FSA testing starts next week. Third graders will take FSA Reading on Tuesday (4/5) and Wednesday (4/6). All 4th-6th grade students will take FSA Writing on Thursday (4/7). Please have your student to
school by 8 AM as some testing sessions start right after the bell. Reach out to Cayce Carter at Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org with any questions.
The third iReady Diagnostic will take place in April. Students will take the Reading Diagnostic the week of April 11th and the Math Diagnostic the week of April
18th. Please make sure your student has a pair of headphones for testing.
CONTESTS AND CHALLENGES
ENERGY WHIZ
All of our students are encouraged to compete at the large, regular in-person Energy Whiz on April 30th in Cocoa. To learn more, check out this slide deck. If you are attending, please pay $40 for the team here. Our first place winners at the Virtual Energy Whiz do not have to pay. Please contact Mrs. Trujillo is this is the case. Make sure you are signed up so we know which students to expect in Cocoa on April 30th! This year's competitions include:
Critter Comfort Cottage (gr. 3 - 12) -- design & build a 'green' animal habitat
Energy Transfer Machine (gr. 3 - 12) -- build a successful Rube Goldberg machine
Energy Innovations (gr. 3 - 12) -- design & build a project powered by renewable energy
Energy Inspired Art (gr. K - 12) -- explore renewable energy or climate change using any form of art
Junior Solar Sprint (gr. 4 - 8) -- design & build a model solar car
Solar Energy Cook-Off (gr. 3 - 12) -- design, build a solar cooker and try it out

ART CONTEST
Students will create a visual design showing people how to take simple steps to reduce food waste.

We will accept entries through April 8, 2022
Winners will be announced the first week of May, 2022

Please remember that you should not arrive on campus before clubs dismiss. Even coming 5 minutes early causes backups in our dismissal process.
- Building 1 (grades K-3) - clubs dismiss at 3:40 during the week and 2:40 on Wednesday
- Building 2 (grades 4-6)- clubs dismiss at 3:30 during the week and 2:30 on Wednesday
