Transition

Our district spends a considerable amount of time working on transition. We will reserve this section of the newsletter for information to help you and your children with this process. For the purpose of clarification, we will use the following terms for each grade level: Rising 7th Graders (current 6th graders, class of 2024), Rising 6th Graders (current 5th graders, class of 2025), and Rising 5th Graders (current 4th graders, class of 2026).

Rising 7th Graders

The Junior High has begun the process of transitioning your son/daughter as a seventh grader! We are confident that the outstanding academic foundation Greene has established will carry on here at the Junior High. In addition, the Junior High has a dynamic after school life with many athletic opportunities and clubs. We look forward to your family joining our Junior High community. While the transition process is in the early planning stages, we are very excited to think about your son/daughter joining us in August! Please put the following dates on your calendar:

  • In light of a scheduling conflict, we will be moving Parent Orientation/Academic Fair to February 27 at 7:00 p.m. The Special Education Orientation for Rising 7th Graders will also be moved to February 27 at 6:00 p.m.

  • Wednesday and Thursday, April 25th and 26th, 2018: Rising 7th grade student tours at the Junior High.

There are many more details that I will communicate to parents and students over the next few months.

Author Visit Update

It is with great sadness that I have to share with you that we are canceling the author visit this year. Shelley Pearshall notified us that she has a serious medical condition that has caused her to cancel all visits this year.

In the true fashion of the Greene School, we are developing a plan to honor her and her work during this difficult time. Mrs. Sloan will use time during her Multimedia Explorations class for students to continue working on their projects and allow them to focus on honoring Ms. Pearsall's work. Our fabulous Language Arts department will be working with students to learn more about empathy and discuss ways we can support Ms. Pearsall throughout this process.

Many of the activities that have been planned for the author visit will continue - the contest in the media center, principal's pick luncheon, etc.

The purpose of the author visit is to promote reading. We will continue to work to reach this goal as we support Ms. Pearsall. More information will be coming as we develop plans. Thank you for supporting this effort.

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits

Can Help Stop Germs

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent flu.

1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

2. Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others.

3. Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

4. Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

6. Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids,

and eat nutritious food.
