Summer Learning 2020 -- Volume 3
Mountain View PTO 2020
Back to school preparedness
- Students will be able to carry backpacks, as lockers will not be used initially. A sturdy backpack would be a good idea. Students will have a district issued device, so backpack with a laptop sleeve might be a good thought- not required.
- Water bottles are encouraged as the water fountains will not be used.
- Earbuds with a microphone or a headset might also be VERY helpful.
- Graphite mechanical pencils or wood pencils will be used. A personal hand-held pencil sharpener might be a good purchase.
Middle school day will begin at 7:35am and students will be dismissed at 1:45pm. Our current plan is to run all 9 periods each day, so classes will be approximately 38 minutes long.
Students will not dress in a school uniform for Physical Education class until further notice. This is to avoid the close quarters of the school locker rooms. However, we ask that students wear rubber-coated shoes (sneakers) for PE class.
- All 6th grade students will be given agendas. 7th and 8th grade students who wish to use paper agendas will be able to receive one.
List of suggested school supplies can be found HERE.

Setting up a successful home learning environment
- Create a visual schedule for each week.
- You may wish to have your child follow his or her “in person” schedule on remote days. This would create more structure and give time for teachers to respond to work.
- On " Asynchronous Remote Learning" Days, encourage students complete the most challenging assignments earlier in the day. The teachers will have time in the afternoon to review submitted work and respond to questions.
- Build a schedule for Asynchronous Days.
- Read a helpful article here.
- If meeting timelines is an issue - consider syncing your child's Schoology assignments to their or your phone or outlook calendar. See the steps here . Note this must be done from a desktop computer.
Rising 6th-grade students
Student taking MATH 6 should review the summer packet here. When finished, you can check your answers here.
I’ll be sending an email to 6th grade parents today, to share this info. But I’d also like to send a reminder email to ALL grades in a few days, including the Smore link.
Summer Reading
Your child may read on his/her own, or there are many free summer reading programs available for your uses. We selected three programs (shared below) that might be beneficial for your child.
Students can log days they have read here. A new form can be submitted each week. You may submit past weeks.

What is SYNC?
What?
SYNC is a free summer audiobook program for teens 13+. Returning April 30th and continuing 13 weeks until July 29, SYNC gives participants two thematically paired audiobooks a week. In 2019, 28 titles were given away over 14 weeks.
Why?
SYNC introduces a variety of audiobook experiences to teens to demonstrate that reading can be completed by listening.
Who?
SYNC is sponsored by AudioFile Magazine and titles are delivered through Sora, the student reading app from OverDrive. In advance of accessing the program, download the app from Apple or Google, to the device you anticipate listening on and be ready to go!
How?
Sign-up to get notifications each week when the FREE audiobooks are available. You can receive alerts by text message, email newsletter, or by visiting www.audiobooksync.com. Titles change every Thursday overnight Eastern Time when the program is running.
Please Note: Signing up for these alerts will not send you the titles. The alerts will only tell you when and where the title is available to load into the app.
Access Details
- Titles are accessible in Sora, the student reading app from OverDrive, and are Mac and Windows compatible.
- Most listening devices are supported.
- Each SYNC audiobook will be available to borrow into your SYNC library for a period of 7 days (only).
- Titles, once loaded into the app, are yours indefinitely.

EXACT PATH
Students entering Math 7 through Algebra I, the summer work will be to refine and extend skills through the use of Exact Path. This summer is a gift of time… time to work on your student’s math skills. Exact Path is a program for which each student has an account and an individual learning path based on diagnostic testing. It is a wonderful time to accelerate their skills. This summer we would like each student to complete at least 30 minutes a week on their learning path. If you are looking for an idea, select a day and time to complete the weekly minutes and set an alarm reminder. This way you have a scheduled time and the week doesn’t fly by without completing the work. We hope you and your family take advantage of this wonderful opportunity this summer. As an added bonus, students who complete the 30 minutes per week will receive 1 entry into a drawing to be held at the end of the summer. Students will also be awarded 1 additional entry for each trophy they are awarded.
Students entering Math 7 through Geometry, please refer to the information in the Summer Packet Letter 2020.pdf for your summer assignment.
Students entering Algebra II and other HS courses beyond that may download the summer packet for their next course by going HERE. At this link, students will find the expectations for summer work, packet and answer keys so they can check their progress as they complete it. If anyone is unable to print their own packet, you may e-mail Ms. Knerr sknerr@cvschools.org, and she can make arrangements for a packet to be ready for pick up at the high school main office.
