OVES Holds Family Math & Reading Night
This year’s Family Math and Reading Night was a huge success! We had over 250 parents and students join us for our animal presentation presented by the Lehigh Valley Zoo. Some of the animals presented were a snake, a milky toad, a crowned crane, a porcupine and of course the penguin. We also featured two local authors: Dori Hoch and Nadine Poper. Once the zoo presentation was finished families enjoyed our animal themed stations. Families were able to explore the different stations that were located around the all-purpose room and gym such as Hungry, Hungry Hippos, Kahoot! and make your own binoculars. Our committee was composed of 12 members and volunteers all of which contributed greatly to the evening.
Family Fitness Night Returns to OVES
On the evening of Thursday March 8th, Oley Valley families gathered at the elementary school to participate in the 8th annual Family Fitness Night. This event provided families with an opportunity to have fun interacting with each other while participating in physical activities and improving their cardiovascular health. Some of the activities included: a Shuttle Run, Obstacle Courses, An Upper Body Fitness Mat, Scooter Races, Balance Beam, Step Aerobics, Jump Ropes, and Yoga.
Several community organizations either participated in, or sponsored, the event as well. They provided demonstrations and clinics encouraging all to get involved, and donated door prizes that were awarded by raffle to students and families attending.
Representatives included: The Oley Valley Football Association and Cheerleaders, The Centre for Pilates in Sinking Spring, Penn State Health/St. Joseph Medical Center Physical Therapy and Concussion Management Program, Capital Blue Cross, Windswept Acres, Oley Valley School District Food Services, Hawk Mountain Council Boy Scouts of America, CARON Treatment Centers, Colonial Fitness Club, and Bella Italia Restaurant.
Nutrition information showing the sugar and fat content of foods and beverages commonly consumed proved enlightening. Models demonstrating what it looks like to gain or lose 5 lbs. of muscle vs. 5 lbs. of fat were on display, and BMI Screening was provided. Healthy snacks were served and information on the Oley Valley Elementary School breakfast and lunch program was on hand. Our Elementary School Head Cook,
Mrs. Petry, was available to answer questions.
The event was organized by teachers and staff serving on the Oley Valley Elementary School Wellness Committee.

OVMS Presents Shrek Jr.
The Oley Valley Middle School Drama Club performed their rendition of Shrek The Musical Jr. on Friday, March 16th and Saturday, March 17th, 2018.
Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek the Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. It's a "big bright beautiful world" as everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek (Corbin Teeters), leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek. One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad (Dylan Smith), a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey (Anthony Witt) to confront Farquaad, he's handed a task – if he rescues feisty princess Fiona (Madison Wartzenluft), his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn't be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.
Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek Jr. was an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family. The Oley Valley Middle School Drama Club would like to thank our show sponsors and all of the parents, friends, and families who came to support our show.

8th Graders Participate in Poetry Slam
Eighth grade students in both Mrs. Cooper’s and Ms. Russell’s classes have been creating poems for the 2018 Poetry Slam. Topics have an expansive range that include the comedic, contemporary issues, even tragic. The poetry slam is a terrific opportunity for students to express themselves in a unique way and creates some very teachable moments for teachers and administration. The moments come in regard to content, plagiarism, appropriateness and a willingness to present one’s own original thoughts in front of a group of peers.
Students perform their final products in a live performance in the auditorium…a great if not intimidating experience. These performances were quite impressive. This is an assignment that will continue to be a part of the eighth grade curriculum for years to come!

OVHS Hosts Mosaic Concert
For the size of the Oley Valley High School's student body, there is a very high number enrolled in some sort of music program.
Oley offers chorus, band and orchestra, as well as smaller groups like select chorus and jazz band.
Oley's music program always sounds amazing. The program is brought together and run by chorus and orchestra director Katherine Lynch, and band director Aaron Magaro.
This year, they decided to create a new concert in which the music doesn't stop, flowing continuously from one piece to the next. This mosaic idea came from their participation in a similar concert during their separate times at Penn State University.
The concert was performed on Feb. 27. Lynch and Magaro hope it will become an annual event.
During the concert, which lasted about an hour and a half, performances were included from all of the school's musicians. The small groups, selected by teachers, covered singing, a trumpet duet, a brass quintet and a violin duet.
Oley senior Julia Franckowiak sang with the orchestra,
"The mosaic was an amazing concert, and it is something that a typical high school wouldn't be able to pull off, but it turned out fantastic, and I'm so glad we did it!" she said.
Another senior who performed in a spotlight piece was Madeline Kauffman. Madeline performed in the orchestra, soloed on the piano and played in a violin duet. She said that she would love to perform at the concert again if she had the opportunity.
Sophomore Abriel Franckowiak sang in both the regular chorus and select chorus.
She said, "The concert was such an amazing experience. The concert was a unique idea and included so many talented performers. The only thing that could be fixed is the small number of seating. Next year there should be two nights of the concert."
In the audience, you could tell that nearly everyone was having fun with this innovative concert idea. Everyone did an amazing job. If it works out and the concert can be performed next year, I will definitely plan on attending.
Students call it amazing, writes sophomore Andrew Kline.
