Mrs. Looney-Kanz & Mrs. Merlo:
This week with Mrs. Looney-Kanz:
Kindergarten: Students will glaze their ceramic shark heads inspired by artist, Lorien Stern.
1st Grade: Students will continue to be inspired Brooklyn artist, Rose Lazar. Students will create an overlapping pattern with watercolors that are large and use vibrant colors.
2nd Grade: Students will begin to learn about artist, Yayoi Kusama! Students will begin creating a repeated pattern of printed circles on bright paper. Students will then continue their circle patterns by applying bright marker circles all over their empty space.
3rd Grade: Students will continue to create art inspired by artist, Tyree Guyton. Students will learn about analogous colors and begin choosing their three analogous colors to apply to the empty spaces of their drawings. When finished, students will cut their structures out and glue them to a complimentary colored border.
4th Grade: Students will continue learn about Connecticut artist, Amy Genser. Students are continuing to quill and are beginning to glue their quills to their planet to create landforms.
5th Grade: Students are continuing to learn about California artist, Lili Arnold. Students will observe images and information of native plans from Northern Virginia. Students will sketch and color 3 different native plants that they like. Students will begin to create their design on their foam plate with marker.
This week with Mrs. Merlo:
Kindergarten: Students learned about mixing colors and new printmaking techniques for our new project.
2nd Grade: Students learned about shading and filling our background with color as we finished our robot project
4th Grade: Students worked on using cool or hot tone oil pastels to create an abstract background for our dragon project.

Would your child like to read books and earn free pizza? We are pleased to announce that FDE is partnering with Pupatella Pizza in Leesburg to offer their new "Read for Pizza" program! When a student reads 8 books and fills out the Read for Pizza slip (copies available in the library), they can bring it to Pupatella to redeem for a free Bimbi (Cheese) pizza. Enjoy!
In the next couple of weeks, students in grades 4-5 will continue learning about a variety of historical time periods connected to nonfiction, historical fiction, and biography by participating in a "book tasting"! Next week's "buffet" features books from the 1900s!
4th and 5th grade students will also continue participation in our online Book Club, "Chapter Chat," which includes both "Virginia Readers Choice" and "Virginia Reads" books. All information, including the Padlet link, can be found in Mrs. Ricci's Library Schoology Course or HERE.
Students in grades K-3 will continue "March Madness- a Tournament of Books" with selections based on Virginia Readers' Choice and Virginia Reads. This week's read-alouds are Survivor Tree and I Don't Want to Read This Book.
A few reminders:
1. K-3 students: Do you want to earn a FREE BOOK and reading incentive prize to celebrate your reading success? Pick up your April reading calendar in the library! See HERE for more information.
2. Grades 4-5 REACH FOR THE STARS will focus on the genres of Fantasy and Science Fiction, with small groups and Book Talks to encourage reading "deep" and "wide" across all genres. The students have access to all program details in Schoology and will track progress and earn Book Bucks to celebrate reading success!
3. Our library catalog can be found HERE. Please remember that students are welcome to visit the library anytime during the school day-- and even daily to exchange a book(s)! Library staff is pleased to work with students to find "just right" books 🙂
4. Please work with your student to return any books that are overdue. Email and paper reminders are sent as needed. Please contact wendy.ricci@lcps.org with any questions.
Ms. Parcelli & Mr. Holmes:
We are SO PROUD of our 3rd Grade Stars for another spectacular performance of Go Fish on Wednesday! Thank you to everyone who came out in support of the students. We also want to extend another huge thank you to: FDE Administration, FDE Custodial Staff, FDE Specialist Team, the 3rd Grade team, Alpha Delta Kappa, parent volunteers, students, and families for their generous support. The show could not have been a success without your help! If you have any pictures from the performance, please share them with us at katelyn.parcelli@lcps.org and ronald.holmes@lcps.org - we'd love to have them!
Here's what's going on in music class:
With Ms. Parcelli
K – It's Bee Week! Students will move to The Flight of The Bumblebee and sing a song about a baby bumblebee.
1st Grade – Students are finishing up their discussion of musical form and moving on to some spring time activities. We will be learning a song about a cuckoo bird and creating rhythmic ostinatos.
2nd Grade – Students are practicing playing as an ensemble. They will be playing drums, xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels to enhance the story "Commotion in the Ocean" by Giles Andreae.
3rd Grade – Students will learn about the pentatonic scale and how to play it on barred instruments. Students will also play a song about an alligator on barred instruments and improvise using the pentatonic scale.
4th Grade – Students are continuing their Candy Rhythm Composition Projects.
5th Grade – We are finishing "Hot Cross Buns." Students will begin working on a new song of their choice.
Mr. Oakley & Mr. Huddleston:
Weather is getting warm, fitness testing is done, let's get outside and work on our fitness. We will be exploring strategy games. Cooperative games and versions of capture the flag. Can't wait to see you in the gym.
Mrs. Bracaglia & Mrs. Sluss:
In school counseling this week, 3rd grade, and 4th grade students will be focusing on the topics of empathy and coping skills. 5th graders will be learning about empathy by playing a fun empathy escape room. 3rd-5th grader students have finished their career unit and plans have been submitted. Parents, please review this plan with your child and approve it. All plans have been sent via email.
Some 1st grade classes are finishing the third lesson for careers and are working on completing their career plans. 1st grade classes who finished will be moving on to learning about growth mindset. K and 2nd grade have all completed their career plans. Plans will be sent out soon for parent approval! K and 2nd will be moving on to learning about growth mindset.
