A Note From Principal Toleman
Our fifth grade students participated in a Newspaper-in-Education contest co-sponsored by the Iroquois Reading Council and The Chronicle. We had three honorable mentions: Angelina Haese, Angelina Rivera and Rebecka Wakefield. We also had two winners: Wesley Gates and Lillian Willis. Wesley and LIllian will get to spend some time at The Chronicle where they will participate in a workshop with the editor. Congratulations to all of you!
Additionally, the classrooms are filled with such great things. You can walk by any classroom at any time and find students reading, talking about what they read and writing about the book. They are practicing their facts, working with fractions and solving word problems. Our third, fourth and fifth grade students are learning various test taking strategies as they get ready for their NYS assessments. Report cards for Trimester 2 will be sent home Friday, March 16th.
The dates for the NYS assessments for students in grades 3-5 are as follows:
ELA: 4/11 & 4/12
Math: 5/1 & 5/2
Science (Grade 4) end of May
As always we thank you for your support. Please don't every hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns you may have.
Resepctfully,
Rebecca Toleman

March will hopefully…Come in like a lion & go out like a lamb!
The children are really looking forward to some warm weather. This is a very busy and productive month in Kindergarten. Parents As Reading Partners will begin this month. Please be sure to make an effort to participate in this great program!
The children will continue to learn new sight words, bring home interesting mini-books, and explore with new math manipulates. Now that we have celebrated the 100th Day of school, your child has had lots of practice counting to 100. Thank you for practicing all of the new materials with your child.

Please tell your friends and neighbors that Moreau Kindergarten screening for the 2018-2019 school year will be on March 19th & 20th and will take place at Ballard Elementary school.

Snow Fun....

Is spring finally on the horizon? We sure hope so! We’ve had fun playing in the snow but I think all of us are ready for some spring sunshine, green grass, and flowers!
We have been working hard in all areas. We’ve been amping up our reading power by reading longer and more difficult books. In writing, we have started our poetry unit and in math we continue to add and subtract two and three digit numbers using many different strategies. Also, please remember to have your child read every night for about 20 minutes. By doing this you can count those 20 minutes toward your child’s P.A.R.P reading time. Don’t forget to sign the P.A.R.P slip and return it every Monday during the month of March! There are many fun prizes and rewards for your child if they turn their P.A.R.P slip in every week. The last day to turn in the slip is by Wednesday. No slips will be accepted after Wednesday of the week they are due. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks for all of your support, as always!

In Reading, we have just finished our unit on nonfiction reading! Each student researched an extreme weather event and presented to the class! Keep a look out for your child's final draft of their persuasion essay. It will be coming home soon!
We are knee deep in our unit on fractions in math!
In Social Studies, students are researching what life was like during colonial times and creating a poster with their group to teach the class about colonial life.
Finally, in science, we have been experimenting with graduated cylinders and learning how to measure the volume of objects.

We continue to learn about Westward Expansion. Each student chose a Westward related topic, conducted research and wrote a detailed research paper. All of these wonderful works were on display outside of our classrooms. We have now moved on to write a persuasive paper based on whether or not we feel we should have zoos.
In Math, we wrapped up our unit on multiplying and dividing fractions. Our next unit of study is geometry; specifically volume and plane figures. Later in March, we will take a break from the modules and review what we have learned so far.
In ELA, we just finished up our research unit on zoos. Students applied what they learned from researching Westward Expansion and researched about zoos. This month, we will also begin reviewing and preparing for the New York State test in ELA.
