Dates to Remember
Counselor's Corner
Hello Amazing Parents! What a rough start getting back into routines, but we are moving and grooving! As we approach February, this month we will be celebrating acts of kindness as well as National School Counseling Week. National School Counseling Week is February 5-9th! During this week, you can celebrate with your child and others on how the Bradley Counseling Program has made a difference in your child's life. I want to let you know that I'm so proud to be your school counselor here at Bradley. It is my vision to help our students become resilient and powerful future leaders. Bradley Bears can change our world by adding value to one's heart and changing one's mindset. During this month, we will to focus on our new character trait "Trustworthiness." We want to make sure that all of our Bradley Bears understand that true trustworthiness meets this criteria:
*One who takes responsibility for one's feelings and behavior
*One who is honorable, responsible, honest, and dependable
During this month, our staff and student leaders are truly dedicated in helping your child achieve this character trait with many frequent reminders, games, and activities.

Art
Thank you to all the Bradley Bears who came to the Western Art Show! A special thank you to those who had art work in the show and represented Bradley in our very first year participating!
In Mrs. Mac's Room:
I know parents are eager to see our creations, but we are holding on to our work so we can reflect on our growth as artists! All artwork will come home in your artist's portfolio. Every grade has started a new project on self portraits. We have finished our skills portion of the project by learning about face proportions and some tricks to drawing. Now they will have the opportunity to look at themselves in a mirror and apply what they have learned to their unique self portrait! Each grade level will be using their self portraits in a different way!
Kindergarten will learn about texture and printmaking when creating their self portrait.
First grade will learn how to express different emotions with multiple self-portraits.
Second grade will share facts about themselves by adding symbols and personal touches to their self-portrait.
Third grade will learn about line designs and patterns when creating their self-portrait.
Fourth grade will study Pop Art and choose their favorite artist's style to apply to their self-portrait.
In Mrs.Gutierrez's Class:
Kinder & 1st: Students will use different types of lines to emphasize one of the elements of art while creating a 3D artwork.
2nd: Students will learn about an abstract art technique and will apply some of the elements of art and principles of design on their artworks.
3rd: Students will learn about radial symmetry while using the printmaking technique.
4th: Students will create their own composition using the elements of art and the principles of design.
Music
Kindergarten is learning about high and low sounds. They enjoy telling the story, "Big Pig" with their high and low speaking voices, playing the xylophone to "Sea Shell," and pretending to be kernels of corn in our song, "Popcorn."
First grade is practicing steady beat. We are using drums to help us put the beat in our feet. Students are also learning the difference between beat and rhythm as we move toward beginning music literacy. They love marching to "Highway No. 1."
Second grade is practicing decoding and creating rhythmic patterns with our newest rhythm, the half note. A favorite game we play is "Shoo Fly."
Third grade is learning different folk dances like "Alabama Gal" and "Heel and Toe Polka." On March 6, the third graders will host a Family Folk Dancing Night! Look for more information in the coming weeks.
Fourth grade is busy preparing for our music program based on the book Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss. Students are choosing how they want to participate in addition to singing on the risers: speaking, playing instruments, or dancing. We are excited to show our parents all we have learned on Thursday, March 8 at 6 pm.
P.E.
Our favorite month is here! February is the month of love, and we celebrate having healthy HEARTS! Learning all about our cardiovascular system will be the highlight of the month. In PE we will set up our Heart Adventure Obstacle Course! The students will learn how the heart and lungs work together to bring oxygen to our entire body. This is an amazing way to learn and exercise at the same time.
We will also continue with our 21 days to Love your Heart Challenge, which started on January 25th and will end on Valentine's Day. For 21 days we encourage our school community to make healthier choices and avoid "junk food," sugary drinks, and to stay active everyday.
Third and Fourth grade students will be doing their yearly FitnessGram Test; therefore, remind them to practice the exercises on the FitnessGram practice sheet. (see below)
Have a great month!

Kindergarten
It’s time for a fun February in Kindergarten!
The 100th Day of School is already here! We will celebrate being “100 Days Smarter” in our classrooms on February 12th. The teachers have lots of “100” themed stations planned for the day! Please remember to send your child’s 100th Day Home Project to show and share the way you decorated “100” together! 100 pennies on a posterboard, 100 legos in a box, or 100 stickers on a paper are just some ideas to get you thinking creatively. If you make a 100th Day hat or shirt, please have your child wear it on February 12th with pride!
We will welcome parents in our classrooms on February 14th for our Kindergarten Valentine’s Celebrations. Please arrive at 11:30am and plan to stay until 12:15pm. All are welcome! Your child will need to send in his Valentine’s cards simply labeled “From ____” for easy distribution. Leave the “To” section blank. After our party, you may choose to eat lunch with your child in the cafeteria. Please check your class Sign Up Genius Link for needed items. We ask for all donations by Friday, February 9th to plan for two successful events. Thank you for your kindness!
The Kinder Team
First grade
We are excited to really get into the swing of the Spring semester. February will be a busy, busy month for our first graders. February 13th will be a day full of fun in first grade as we celebrate the 101st day of school. Our first grade field trip isn't until March, but we'd like you to save the date! Our First Grade field trip to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo will be on Monday, March 5. As the date approaches, please be on the look-out in your child’s folder for more details.
In Language Arts, we will be reading and telling the difference between fables and folktales. We will begin using factual information in our writing to write “All-Abouts”.
In Math we will be coming back to addition & subtraction but this time, we will be working within 15. We will continue finding the missing addend in number sentences, balancing equations, and recognizing and creating fact families.
In Science, we will be reviewing our soil & rocks unit, identifying and describing natural sources of water (oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, etc.), sorting and classifying living things based upon whether or not they have basic needs and produce offspring, and investigating characteristics of animals.
In Social Studies we continue learning about inventors and how changes in technology and other inventions improve our community and make our lives better. We will also be learning about influential leaders in history, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington and how they have shaped our nation. We will end the month of February gearing up for the rodeo and diving into Texas History.
Second grade
We are so proud of our Second Grade Bears and all the growth we've seen so far this year. February is going to be another month of fun and learning.
In language arts, our 2nd grade authors will be writing responses to stories they've read and sharing their ideas and opinions about other authors. Then we will showcase our talents and interests when will write "all about" books.
In reading, we will study literary elements in fiction and the organization of non-fiction texts. Remember to read every night!
Our mathematicians will take what we've learned so far this year to the next level. We will begin place value to the thousands place and 3 digit addition/subtraction with regrouping.
Our scientists are very excited to learn about the weather. We will then move into learning about the water cycle and Earth/Space.
February is Black History Month. We will study various historical figures and their contributions to our country.
At the end of February, be on the look out for information about our field trip in March. More information to come soon!
Thanks for all your support!
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Teachers
third grade
This month in third grade we will continue to LOVE learning fun new things! In reading, we are looking forward to analyzing biographies and autobiographies in our literary nonfiction unit. We will focus on understanding theme and providing evidence from the text to deepen our understanding. We will make inferences about the varied structural patterns and draw conclusions about how an author’s sensory language creates imagery.
In writing, we will be communicating ideas through letter writing and literary response. Our writers will use elements of the writing process to write expository and procedural or work-related texts to communicate ideas and information to specific audiences for specific purposes.
In math we will be investigating fractions using number lines, objects, models, and more! We will also discover how they are used in everyday life. Once we learn the basics of fractions we will take that knowledge and use it to help us compare fractions. There are some very simple ways in which you can extend this learning at home, too. Look for examples of fractions and incorporate them in your conversations. Everyday activities such as cooking, for example, can provide wonderful inspiration to reinforce the concept of fractions and the way we use them in everyday life.
Throughout the month of February we will celebrate Black History Month, presidents, and important women throughout history. The students will be involved in research projects to discover our rich history and honor those that have paved the way for so many. In science we will explore weather and how weather is predicted. We will also begin to learn about different environments including grasslands, freshwater, and saltwater.
Please continue to encourage your child to read nightly and practice their multiplication facts. Thank you for all you do each and everyday to help support your Bradley Bear!
fourth grade
An exciting month of February lies before us with special events and academic challenges.
Let’s talk academics. In math, we will find the children working with fractions and of course, continuing to practice their multiplication and division. Science will find us expanding in the earth science areas of earth patterns and properties of soil. Social Studies finds Texas winning the Texas Revolution and becoming a major player in the United States. Writing focus on transitions and adding supporting details in their expository writing. In reading, we'll focus on the genres of poetry, drama and non-fiction. Please continue to monitor your child's reading each night. Ask them questions about what they are reading – for example, you could ask them about various characters and have them summarize the reading they did that night.
There are several special events for our fourth graders this month as well. We will be taking our field trip to the Sam Houston Museum on Feb. 14. We also have the CISD Sci-Tech festival and our Destination Imagination competition this month. There seems to something almost every week!
