Walnut Talent Show
We're looking for students to show off their talents! Walnut's annual Talent Show will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10th. Sign-ups begin January 11th and run through January 21st. Students may sign up with either Mrs. Tyler, Ms. Floyd, or Mrs. Randolph. All song lyrics must be approved by one of these three teachers by January 21st. Inappropriate lyrics or lyrics submitted late will not be permitted. Students will be notified of their audition times on January 22nd. Auditions will be held after school on Monday, January 25th and Tuesday, January 26th. Students selected for this year's show must attend rehearsals on 2/1, 2/4, 2/8, and 2/9 from 2:40-4:00 p.m. We know it will be another great show!
The International Dinner is one of Walnut's favorite traditions. It is a wonderful way to gather the Walnut "family" together and share food from various cultures. Entertainment and drinks are provided at this PTA-sponsored event, and families bring a food dish that reflects their heritage. Please save the evening of Thursday, January 28th, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and plan to attend with the whole family. Look for a flier to go home later in the month.
An important goal is Walnut is providing up-to-date digital technology that will support students' learning goals. This year, Walnut has invested in the Achieve3000 reading program for students in grades 2-5. The interactive program allows students increased practice with nonfiction reading materials at their own Lexile levels, and it encourages critical thinking by requiring open-ended responses to questions. The days of "bubbling" multiple choices answers are over! Students are working with Achieve3000 in the computer lab, but they may also access it from home. An informational sheet, including directions for accessing the program with each student's personal password, was sent home before winter break. If your child is in grade 2-5 and did not receive the directions sheet, please contact the office or your child's teacher.

WALNUT PTA UPDATE
January PTA News:
We would like to send a BIG “Thank You” to everyone who made the 2016 Wildcat Wonderland Holiday Shop a success. We received so many fantastic handmade crafts from both teachers and families at Walnut. Also, lots of people volunteered their time to help run the shop. Our hearts are full as we reflect on the generosity of the Walnut community. With the money raised, we were able to make the season a little brighter for some families in need!
Thank you Walnut!!!!!!
As the New Year begins we are looking for people interested in filling PTA board positions for the 2016-2017 school year. If you are interested in becoming a board member, please contact Jill Frazier firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our annual International Dinner will be on Thursday, January 28th from 5:30-7:30 pm in the MPR. Please bring a dish to share that reflects your heritage. The PTA will provide drinks and entertainment. It is always great evening with lots of delicious treats!
