What's New at Walnut?

Principal's Message

Happy New Year! It's always wonderful to start school again in January with a fresh outlook and renewed energy to move forward. Students are all experienced in their grade levels at this point in the year, so they are ready to focus on deepening and broadening their academic, artistic, and social skills. Please ask your child to share their school experiences with you. The Harvard Family Research Project recently published a study underscoring the connection between parent involvement/interest in school with student success. As you discuss school with your children, provide a place for them to complete homework, and attend school events, you communicate the importance of education. If you ask your children about their school day and their reply consists of "fine," or the dreaded, "I don't remember," try a different tact. With my own two children, it helped to have an open-ended approach, such as, "Tell me about 3 interesting things that happened at school today," or "Tell me about 2 things that went well today and about one thing you're concerned about." An open dialogue helps keep you informed about your child's educational experience, builds a trusting parent-child relationship, and develops your child's communication skills. It's a win-win-win!

January PTA News:

We would like to send a BIG “Thank You” to everyone who made the 2016 Wildcat Wonderland Holiday Shop a success. We received so many fantastic handmade crafts from both teachers and families at Walnut. Also, lots of people volunteered their time to help run the shop. Our hearts are full as we reflect on the generosity of the Walnut community. With the money raised, we were able to make the season a little brighter for some families in need!

Thank you Walnut!!!!!!

As the New Year begins we are looking for people interested in filling PTA board positions for the 2016-2017 school year. If you are interested in becoming a board member, please contact Jill Frazier j4frazier@gmail.com.

Our annual International Dinner will be on Thursday, January 28th from 5:30-7:30 pm in the MPR. Please bring a dish to share that reflects your heritage. The PTA will provide drinks and entertainment. It is always great evening with lots of delicious treats!

Meet a Walnut Staff Member

Walnut is thrilled to have Mrs. Friedman return as our credentialed art specialist this year. Mrs. Friedman was born and raised in Westlake Village, and she attended CVUSD schools from Kindergarten through High School. It's no surprise that her teachers said she was very creative. While attending the University of Arizona as a journalism major, she boosted school spirit as the school mascot--Wilma Wildcat! Mrs. Friedman still loves the theater and has fond memories of performing in plays and musicals. She and her husband (who attended Walnut himself) have two beautiful daughters, and her 4-year-old has been spotted around campus helping Mom with art class preparations. Walnut students attend art class with Mrs. Friedman approximately once per month, and this year's focus is on the art styles of Caldecott-winning illustrators.

Walnut Elementary School

Walnut is a little elementary school with a BIG heart, where every student is valued and encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning. We believe in developing the whole child, so we invest in the visual and performing arts, technology, and physical fitness in addition to traditional academics. Walnut has an active PTA, School Site Council, and English Language Advisory Council. Each of these groups of parents and community members would LOVE to have YOU join them in making sure Walnut provides the best possible learning environment for students and families. Please contact us if you'd like to know more. --Mrs. Wall, Principal
