The Sun

Core
It is the innermost layer and is where energy from nuclear fusion is generated.
Radiative Zone
It is the middle layer of the sun's interior and is a region of very tightly packed gases.
Convective Zone
It is the outermost layer of the sun's interior. The hot gases rise while the cooler ones sink.
Photosphere
This is the surface of the sun. It emits the light that we see.
Chromosphere
It is the layer above the photosphere and it appears as a red glow around the sun and is almost transparent.
Corona
It is the outermost layer of gases that surround the sun. It is only seen during a solar eclipse.
Sunspots
Sunspots are dark spots that appear on the surface of the sun. They appear darker because they are cooler than the surrounded areas. They occur in an 11 year cycle.
Prominence
A solar prominence is a large, arched, bright feature extending outward from the Sun's surface. The red-glowing looped material is plasma. They are loops of gas.
Flare
It is an explosion occurring on the sun. They often occur near sunspots.
Aurora
Auroras ( or Northern Lights) are natural light displays in the sky that are predominantly seen in high latitude regions.
