Digital Citizenship: Parent Information
All grades have been receiving instruction regarding different aspects of digital citizenship. Kindergarten, first and second grade students have had lessons on keeping private information protected, staying safe, selecting websites are just right for them, creating strong passwords and online communication. Third, Fourth and Fifth grade students have had lessons on balancing media time with real life, protecting private information, determining their online identity, and reflecting on how media influences people.
I would encourage you to ask your students about what they are learning. We have instructed all students to ask their trusted adult before filling out any online forms. This usually happens when students are signing up for games that save student progress. This helps you be informed about how your student is engaged online.
In this section are some video links for having conversations with your student. Included in the recommended website section of this newsletter are sites to practice some digital citizenship principles and safe browsers for elementary students.
Common Sense Media Links:
Library Access At Home
Student can use an internet browser to access the catalog from the Library tab on the West Maple web site. Students will click on "library catalog" under the Library tab. Then students will click on "log in" located near the top right on the page if using a computer or under the menu on the top left if using a mobile device. Students will then enter their user name and password. From there students can save items to their favorites for future use, check to see what books they currently have out, or they can read available eBooks.
