ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
Here’s what we know about reading: quantity has a quality all its own. Literacy is powered by constant interaction with literature. We want students excited to read, for books to have their own gravity and to pull kids in. To this end, we have been working diligently to focus units on student choice in reading, incorporating many contemporary texts. While some of the classics will remain, we want to find books that hit young people where they are to hook them in. Hundreds of new titles have been added to class shelves so students will always be able to find a book they want to cozy up with. As the holidays approach, ask your student what they intend to be reading on the snowy days ahead!
BIOLOGY STUDENTS DESIGN A BIOMOLECULE
Biology students completed their inaugural project using the new STEM room 3D printers purchased through the referendum. They researched a biomolecule of interest as part of our Biochemistry and Metabolism unit, and then designed their molecule using an browser-based molecule rendering program. Examples include: Testosterone, Estrogen, Adrenaline, Vitamin A, Lactose, and Glucose. After presentations are complete each student will be able to keep their biomolecule. The results were excellent, ask your student to show you their 3D printed model!
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
The Evansville Science Olympiad Team participated in their first invitational on Nov. 16th. We competed in variety of events for a total of 26 events throughout the day. EHS Science Olympiad team members placed in Astronomy, Circuit Lab, Dynamic Planet, and Water Quality. This month our officer team also took some time to mentor our future team members who are on the JC McKenna Science Olympiad Team!
NEWS FROM THE LMC
The LMC offers many online resources for students on our website: https://www.ecsdnet.org/programs-support/evansville-high-school.cfm.
They can find credible research information, digital tools, library books and more. Students can even monitor their own library accounts through Destiny. They are able to find books, audiobooks, magazines and playaways using the online catalog, put materials on hold and renew their checked out materials.
We also have many audio options if students are looking to listen to their books with Overdrive! Ebooks can also be checked out and then listened to on any device with audio tools in Destiny and with the digital tool Snap and Read. Please feel free to contact the LMC for more information.
GLOBAL EDUCATION PROJECT
TECHNOLOGY
The Technology Education renovation is completed. The automotive lab is busy every day. Cars continue to roll in and out throughout the day. The welding lab is fully functional. The project of the month is the rebuilding of a utility trailer. This project includes the re-wiring of the lights, fabricating new side rails, installation of a tool box and repositioning an axel. The fabrication/woods lab has the machines in the final positions, dust collection has been connected and power is on. Work tables need to be moved from storage into the lab to finish the space. Storage is going to be an ongoing project and fine tuning will continue throughout the year. The CAD lab and the front fabrication lab is in use everyday.
ART NEWS & ART GALA WINNERS
Students are busy creating art in both Mr. Riel and Ms. Miller’s art classes. New student artwork will be put on display in the hallways over the next few weeks. On Nov. 15th the EHS art department teamed up with BASE to put on an art gala that was held at Emma’s Table in Evansville. Students created artwork around the theme Not Everyone Is Doing It. The students shared examples of their alternatives to underage drinking in the artwork they created. The student artwork was judged by community members and they picked a finalist in each of the 4 artistic categories. Congratulations to the all the students who won. Dennis Lin’s word art design entitled Oneself was picked as the grand prize winner. His artwork will be featured on a billboard in Evansville in the coming months.
