Necessary Roughness

By Marie Lee

Senior Chan Jung Kim, an Asian-American teen living in Los Angeles, is a star on his soccer team and enjoys school, although not quite the student his twin sister is. Because of his uncle’s financial failure the family moves to Minnesota to take over his business. Chan finds the community unwelcoming, not culturally diverse and no soccer, just football. Eventually, the twins find a nitch for themselves. His sister Young is a talented flute player and joins the band, and Chung becomes a member of the varsity football team. Cultural differences and understanding, acceptance by peers, the importance of sports, family life changes like moving and death and generational conflicts are just some of the issues that Chung faces during his senior year. - Mary Boyd (Retired librarian - IISD)
