Principal's Corner
I would like to thank you for all the support you all have shown over the past few weeks to the Garcia family. I feel very proud and very honored to be part of this incredible community.
I would also like to thank you for the support I have received regarding my message about the need to talk to our children, about being more loving and caring with others. Our philosophy and our culture at Franklin Academy have always been based on our care for others and on showing it with actions and not only words. That is why I am sharing with you this picture that I took this week of two students, where one is tying another student’s shoe. It does not get better than this!
Today, I would like to give you another tip for your child(ren): I would like you to try this strategy that I have already begun to use with my students. When you ask your children questions about their day, try asking them open-ended questions, and not questions that just require a yes/no answer.
This way, you give your child the opportunity to talk to you and being heard . If your child decides to tell you things, try not to interrupt them and let them keep talking for as long as they want. You will be surprised at the many things your child will share with you. Lately, I have realized that our children feel the need to be heard, and unfortunately, sometimes we don’t take the time to do it.
Here you have a few examples of some good questions you can ask your child:
- What’s the best part of your day at school? Why?
- What is your favorite subject in school? Tell me about the best project or activity you’ve ever done in that subject.
- What’s something you’re really good at in school?
- What is the most important thing you learned in school NOT taught by a teacher?
- What do you think is the most important quality in a teacher? Why?
- Who is someone you look up to at school? Why do you admire them?
- What’s the worst part of your day at school? Why? What do you think can we do to make it better?
Parents, if you put in practice this recommendation, please let me know how it went! I really hope this small tip helps us building better relationships with our children.
Your very proud principal,
Sergio Delgado
