SLCS District Update
12.9.2021
Note from the Superintendent
Like all of you, my heart goes out to the individuals associated with the Oxford Community who were confronted with the unthinkable last week. Any occurrence of this nature is one too many and is unsettling in ways beyond words.
Please be absolutely assured that safety is of utmost importance to our entire staff. I am confident in saying that our practices and procedures in place to maintain a safe learning environment are sound. We practice various drills multiple times each year. On Friday of last week, each school staff held a virtual staff meeting to review several safety related topics including a review of the ALICE protocol. A review also took place with students on Monday.
Our district Safety Advisory Team, which includes members of law enforcement, meets regularly throughout the school year to address safety related items. In addition to periodic reviews, tragic incidents as occurred last week, are cause to take a deeper look at our practices/procedures. The Safety Advisory Team met on Tuesday of this week and will be meeting on a more frequent basis to review several safety topics including additional safety personnel, training, and equipment. The secondary schools are also looking to coordinate opportunities for students to provide their valuable insights related to school safety.
Questions are generally best addressed at the school level with the building administrator(s). However, individuals should never hesitate to contact me or another central office administrator with questions. As a school district, we are at our best when working in partnership. School, home, and community equals SLCS Family!
For those that are interested, the information included in this link was shared with us as a way to support the students, staff, and community in Oxford.

Stakeholder Input Survey
This school year our district is working to develop what we will be calling “Snapshot of our Learners.” The purpose of this work is to collaboratively develop a timeless set of inclusive, universal skills and ways of being that unify and define South Lyon Community Schools. In other words, we are developing the compelling “why” that drives all of our work and interactions with students.
Our district steering committee has been working with facilitators from Oakland Schools to develop a series of questions we would like to ask of our stakeholders across the district, including district staff and families, to help identify the universal skills and dispositions we would like to include. We will be gathering feedback from our stakeholders through surveys and focus groups and plan to use that input to help develop a final product over the spring of 2022.
We invite you to provide your feedback by taking a few moments to complete this short survey.
Survey Link: https://tinyurl.com/South-Lyon-Stakeholders
The survey will be open from December 9th - 17th. The survey will ask you to rank your choices for several of the questions, which you can do by dragging and reordering the answer choices.
Additionally, the last question of the survey will ask for your input on how the district should best utilize upcoming funding from the Federal government through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds (ESSER). These funds are provided to districts to help address the ongoing impact of the pandemic.
If you are interested in participating in a focus group session, please look for an interest form that will be sent out right after the new year. Our parent focus group sessions will be held in-person on the following dates/times:
January 11, 2022 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm
January 20, 2022 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm
January 28, 2022 from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
If we have more interest in these sessions than available slots, we will do a random draw to select participants for each session. We will also be holding focus group sessions for students, staff and business leaders throughout the months of January and February.

Thank you for the continued patience and understanding as we work through the driver shortage. Our drivers and transportation leaders continue to step up to provide as few cancellations as possible. We also continue with our efforts to attract new drivers to join the team. It is possible that cancellations will continue and we will monitor the situation and make necessary changes as needed.
Also great job to our Transportation Department for receiving the Michigan State Police Certificate of Excellence for bus inspections.
