“Peanut and Tree Nut Alert School”
Fall 2021
Dear Romeo Middle School Parents,
Romeo Middle School is a “Peanut and Tree Nut Alert School”. Peanuts and tree nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc. can pose a health risk to some of our students with “airborne” and other nut allergies, and are unsafe to bring to school. Each parent who sends his or her child to Romeo Community Schools should feel assured that our staff members will do their utmost to keep their child safe and learning every day. The Peanut and Tree Nut alert status is one of the many ways that Romeo Middle School will provide the trust that parents place in us, while also meeting the requirements of the law to provide the necessary accommodations to students with severe allergies.
It is necessary that no peanut, tree nut, or items that “may contain peanuts or tree nuts” are brought to school.
We want to be clear that these procedures are not voluntary for students, staff, or visitors at Romeo Middle School. Students, staff, and visitors are required to abide by these procedures. Should an unsafe item be brought to Romeo Middle School, this is how we will proceed:
If unsafe snacks are brought to school by students, Romeo Middle lunch staff will remove the unsafe item.
The Romeo Middle staff will reassure the student that he/she is not in trouble for bringing the item to school.
We encourage all families to read all labels on packages carefully every time. Ingredients can change without warning, so reading labels each time will ensure you avoid any ingredients that may cause a reaction. For more information on safe foods please refer to the following website www.foodallergy.org.
We hope parents and families will be partners in setting clear expectations for students to follow school rules and procedures. We will be going over the Peanut and Tree Nut Alert procedures with our staff and students periodically to remind everyone of how important these procedures are to assure the safety of our students. As always, we thank you for your cooperation and support!
Sincerely,
Mr. Todd Robinson
Superintendent
Mr. Brad Martz
