Speak

By: Laurie Halse Anderson

Summary

"I am Outcast." Pg 4. Melinda Sordino's freshmen year is off to a horrible start. Everybody hates Melinda because of what she did. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, and now her friends, and even strangers, all hate her. She does eventually gain one friend though, she doesn't know what Melinda did at the party, her name is Heather. Months pass and things aren't getting better. She's a pariah. The lowest if the low. Avoided by everyone. But eventually, she'll reveal what happened at the party (she was raped). And when she finally speaks the truth, everything will change.

Character Analysis

Melinda Sordino is an outcast from life. Everybody hates her except for one person, Heather. She is a teenager with black hair. She rarely ever talks, and if she does talk, it's to her parents or Heather.

"It is my first morning of high school. I have seven new note-books, a skirt I hate, and a stomachache." Pg 3

Conflict/Resolution

Melinda's type of conflict is character vs character. Melinda was raped by someone named Andy Evans. Through out the book, Melinda is very quiet and never tells anyone about the rape until the end of the book. She keeps all her emotions pent up inside her and is very depressing.

"I reach in and wrap my fingers around a triangle of glass. I hold it to Andy Evan's neck." Pg 195

Theme

The theme of Speak is, if you have a problem you should tell someone. Melinda never tells anyone about her problems and gets really depressed. If you have a problem, you should tell someone you trust and try to stop the problem.

"Let me tell you about it." Pg 198

Textual Evidence

The most meaningful part of Speak was when Melinda stood up to Andy. It was my favorite part of the book. My favorite quote from the book is, I am Outcast. It represents how Melinda is outcast, but eventually becomes popular.

Book Review

I actually really liked this book and want to see the movie. If i had to rate this book, it would be a 4/5 stars. It isn't the best book, but I really liked it.
