"Where A Great Beginning Lasts a Lifetime"
News and Notes
It has been a busy week of school. Thank you to all for your work with kids this week. March Madness is arriving and green grass with sunshine is coming! Don't forget this Sunday we spring forward our clocks! And to add even more fun, today is was exciting to see the arrival of the STEM Planetarium. Fun activities to come!!!!
Next week welcomes in the muscial Seussical. Good luck to Mrs. Hampton and Mr. Miller as you make the final preparations for next week. Thank you for all of your hard work with our kids! This is always a benchmark on the calendar as a time to reflect and enjoy some great work of our kids. In conversation with Rebecca today she made a very profound statement. "You know, it's starts with the arrival of a box and then the box becomes something magical with the kids!" We are so exctied for next week!
Special thank you to Lauren for her outstanding help with ISTEP, IREAD preparations, and fires of the day! Great work!
Some quick reminders:
*On Tuesday, March 22nd, Kristin Ewing will be on campus to lead a Principal Retirement meeting. This will occur at 8:00 am in the Adventure Center.
*Please help PVE push to the top of the Employee Culture Survey. Please take a few minutes to the complete the survey.
*There are no spring pictures this year.
*If you are an instructional assistant, please touch base with Dana or Chad at least 48 hours prior to taking a personal day.
*Note on the calendar we will participate in the tornado drill on March 22nd. This is a statewide drill. Because of unique building schedules, we will not follow the community alarms but rather conduct our drill earlier in the day.
*Thank you to folks who connected on the book study. We will be connecting this week with the book!

To celebrate National Poetry Month, this year, One Book One School will be the poetry book, Pocket Poems by Bobbi Katz and Marylin Hafner. We will celebrate One Book One School beginning on April 5th and continue through the week of April 18th.
To kick off the event on Tuesday, April 5th we will have a performance from Poetry Alive!. Poetry Alive! does performances for schools by performing poems. The performances will be at 1:40 – 2:15 for preK through second grade and at 2:30 – 3:15 for third and fourth grade.
On Wednesday, April 6th we will continue the theme of poetry with Drop Everything and Read and Write Poetry. At 9:30 – 9:50 we will come over the intercom and invite the whole school to read poetry. This can be as a whole class, in partners, or individually. In the afternoon, at 2:30 – 2:50 we will come over the intercom and invite the whole school to write poetry. This can also be as a whole class, in partners, or individually.
Each day a poem will be read over the announcements to keep the poetry theme going.
On Tuesday, April 12th will be Pleasant View’s Poem In Your Pocket Day. This day, students will have a poem in their pocket that can be shared at a moment’s notice.
These poems can be shared by volunteers during lunch time.
On Friday, April 15th classes have an option to “Buddy Read and Write Poetry”. I know many classes have Book Buddies. Classes will buddy up and read and/or write poetry together with another class. If you do not have a Book Buddy, let Carly know and we will find you one.
We will also ask classes to write a Class Poem about Pleasant View Elementary. The poem can be in any form of poetry: haiku, limerick, rhyming, free verse, or whatever your class feels they want to write. These Class Poems will be shared by one to three students during each grade level’s lunch time beginning on Friday, April 15th and will continue through the week of April 18th. See below for when your class will perform their Class Poem.

What is Global Day of Design?
Global Day of Design is one-day that focuses on using the Design Thinking process in schools. Students will create, make, build, and tinker! The goal of the Global Day of Design is to inspire schools and teachers to incorporate design thinking into everyday practice with our students.
When is Global Day of Design?
This year it will take place on April 26, 2016. We will be sharing students designing, building, making, and tinkering on social media using #GDD16.
What is Design Thinking?
John Spencer, the co-founder of Global Day of Design, defines design thinking as:
The term “design thinking” is often attached to makerspaces and STEM labs. However, design thinking is bigger than STEM. It begins with the premise of tapping into student curiosity and allowing them to create, test and re-create until they eventually ship what they made to a real audience (sometimes global but often local). Design thinking isn’t a subject or a topic or a class. It’s more of way of solving problems that encourages risk-taking and creativity.
If you are interested in helping bring Global Day of Design to our school, we need your help at 8:10 in the Adv. Center on Tuesday, March 15th. We will meet to gather ideas for design projects and organize the logistics of the day. If you have any questions, please email Kathy Drake. We will see you on Tuesday morning!
