DR. FRANCHINI ATTENDS LEGISLATOR LUNCHEON
Superintendent Dr. Franchini attended the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce Meet the Legislators Luncheon Event with a focus on learning about, and advocating for, funding for APCSD.
PES PRIDE ASSEMBLY FEATURES READERS THEATRE

ELEMENTARY FACULTY REVIEWS ELA CURRICULUM
Faculty from our three elementary schools met on Feb. 27 to review options for a K-5 ELA curriculum that will be implemented next school year. Read more here.
RHONDA SMITH RETIRES AFTER NEARLY 28 YEARS
Rhonda Smith moved to Averill Park when she was 18 years old and never left. After driving a bus for Averill Park CSD for nearly 28 years, Mrs. Smith is packing up and retiring with her last day being Friday, Feb. 28! Read more here.
JOHN GRAY VISITS WSL
West Sand Lake Elementary School had John Gray, local author and news broadcaster, visit recently! Mr. Gray previously visited Poestenkill Elementary and will be coming to Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary soon! Read more here.
PES RAISES MONEY FOR AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
Poestenkill Elementary held its annual kids heart challenge! More than 90 jumpers participated. The grand total isn't in yet, but is expected to be more than $6,000 raised for the American Heart Association! Four varsity baseball players came to help out with turn style and hoop hop showdown.

MS. FREEMAN VISITS UGANDA
Over February break, high school math teacher Ms. Nicole Freeman traveled to Jinja, Uganda with The Giving Circle and three other Capital Region teachers to present to Ugandan teachers on questioning techniques, the benefits of a growth mindset, The 8 Mathematical Practices, reading and language teaching strategies, and social emotional learning practices. FIRST GRADE CREATES KINDNESS SHIRTS
West Sand Lake Elementary 1st grade has had a tradition for several years now in which they make kindness shirts with all students. Faculty often wears t-shirts with kindness messages on them and many years ago a student wanted to do the same. Read more here.
WSL SPREADS LOVE TO MILITARY VETERAN
Mrs. Chenette’s 1st grade class created Valentine cards and messages for Retired Major Bill White. Mrs. Chenette learned about the endeavor awhile ago and the WSL K-Kids were interested in joining in this act of kindness for this amazing 104-year-old military veteran. Read more here.
APHS ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE VISITS GRAFTON LAKES
The APHS environmental science class took a trip to Grafton Lakes State Park. The students learned about the geology, ecology, and history of the Rensselaer Plateau with environmental educator, Mary Downey! She then led us on a snowshoe hike over the Graywacke bedrock, into the woods to observe wildlife, and across the frozen Long Pond, which was 13.5 inches thick!
K-KIDS PRESENT TO KIWANIS CLUB
The Kiwanis Club invited their sponsored youth groups to an evening of pizza and chicken wings at the Lake View Restaurant. Representatives from the West Sand Lake Elementary K-Kids club presented about what projects they have been involved with this school year. Ryan Culliton and Ethan Archambeault also attended and represented Poestenkill Elementary.
ARTWORK DISPLAYED IN AMS HALLWAYS
AMS Grade 6 students in Mr. McMurray's Visual Literacy Class created some amazing works of art! Great job everyone!
RELAY TEAMS WIN AT SECTIONALS
The APHS Indoor Track & Field team competed at the Section 2, Group 2 championships and two relay teams placed first. Congratulations to the 4x800M team (Aiden Millington, Adam Limoges, Noah Bonesteel, Austin Millete) and the 4x200M team (Marissa Mazzacco, Abigail Wicks, Caryn Zimmerman, Lydia Munandi) for winning their respective races.

Algonquin Middle School students helped raise money for Make-A-Wish! Way to go everyone!
FIFTH GRADERS HIT THE ICE AT HUDSON VALLEY CC
West Sand Lake Elementary 5th graders went ice skating at Hudson Valley Community College!
AMS HOLDS GRADE 6 OLYMPICS
Algonquin Middle School held its annual Grade 6 Olympics! Great job by everyone who participated!
ANGEL PIGS SURPRISE ON VALENTINE'S DAY
Madi's Angel Pigs surprised every student in the high school with a Valentine during advisory on Valentine's Day.
CITIZENSHIP PASS RECIPIENTS HONORED
APHS celebrated its newest Citizenship Pass recipients! Recipients were nominated by their teachers for their contributions to the High School community. Congratulations to these students for being good citizens of our building.
WORLD OF DIFFERENCE CONDUCTS WORKSHOPS
High school students from A World of Difference conducted workshops with Mrs. Slyer’s 6th and 7th grade FACS classes. The workshops focused on different ways prejudice and discrimination play out in our society, and aim to teach students ways to effectively address these issues.
MHSL BLOOD DRIVE COMING UP
The Miller Hill-Sand Lake K-Kids are hosting the 3rd Annual Blood Drive on Saturday, March 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the MHSL school gymnasium.
AMS PRESENTS WILLY WONKA JR ON MARCH 7
Come see Algonquin's Spring Musical, Willy Wonka Jr! There will be two performances: Friday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m. Doors open a half hour before each performance. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors.

PRIVATE, PAROCHIAL TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION
Requests for transportation to private or parochial schools for the 2020-2021 school year must be completed and returned to the Averill Park School District no later than April 1, 2020. Separate request forms must be completed for each school. For more information, click here.

Saturday, March 21 is the AP Warriors Baseball Clinic at Algonquin Middle School for Grades 1-6.
NOPIATES WEEKEND OF AWARENESS APRIL 4-5
NOpiates presents a Weekend of Awareness on April 4-5 in the APHS Auditorium. The event is free and offers recovery and support resources.
