Message from the Principal

Black Bear Families,

I’d like to share with you some exciting news! Starting in January, our own Amanda Thorderson will be the Head Secretary at Tualatin Elementary. She has an extensive history with our school, working as an Instructional Assistant, TEAF (Tualatin Elementary Arts Foundation) Coordinator, and Secretary. She also was a parent at our school, and served as PTA President. With her social work background, as well as supporting English language learners in school settings, she brings a wealth of experiences into this position. Congratulations Amanda!

Stacy Snyder will be with us part time the first week of January as she continues to train Amanda, and then move to her new school the following week. We thank Stacy for her years of service to our school and wish her well on her new adventures.

Last Friday evening, we hosted the return of our Winter Holiday Event. Families came together, enjoyed some treats provided by our families, and decorated gingerbread houses made by the staff after school. Our rotunda was festive with decorations made by the classes. Thanks to our wonderful PTA for all of the planning and assistance that went into this event, and thanks to the staff for taking the time to make so many graham cracker houses.

I hope you all enjoy your Winter Holiday and enjoy time with family and friends. We look forward to seeing everyone in the new year.

Working with you for our kids,

Jim

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are calling your name

How it works: purchase your dozens online, visit your nearest Krispy Kreme store & redeem using your code. You can also purchase doughnuts and gift them to friends and family, or perhaps some well deserving colleagues! Dozens are redeemable nationwide, so feel free to share this page with other doughnut lovers!

Thank you in advance for your support, we hope you enjoy this sweet offer.

Health Room Clothing Needed

If you are sorting through clothes over Winter Break, please keep the health room in mind. We are especially short on small (sizes 5-8) elastic-waist pants and underwear, although we are happy to accept all sizes! (And remember--for tax purposes, this may be an "in-kind" donation to the school!)

Parents and Caregivers with children under 5 years old

WHAT ARE YOU CHILD CARE NEEDS?

The Early Learning Division is asking for feedback on your family’s experience searching for and using child care. Take the survey and help make a difference! Your input will help the state understand family needs and increase support for child care providers.

All parents and caregivers who complete the survey will receive a $20 Amazon gift card!

Visit their website to complete the 15-minute survey.

Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

One of the common childhood illnesses we’re seeing occasionally in our school is also showing up in adults as well - hand, foot and mouth disease. This is an illness caused by a virus, and is very contagious. It commonly shows up as a rash, made up of small reddish bumps or blisters.

LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW TO PREVENT GETTING IT AND SPREADING IT

If your student exhibits symptoms, please contact your pediatrician and inform the school.

Flu, Covid, RSV, and other Viral Respiratory Illnesses

We are seeing a rise in cases of Influenza A, Covid-19, RSV, and other respiratory illnesses at Tualatin Elementary. As we head into cold and flu season, this is a reminder to please not send your child to school if they are sick. If your child is sick, please follow the TTSD Exclusion Guidance (linked here) for information on when they can return to school.

If your student is diagnosed with Influenza, Covid-19, RSV, or other respiratory illness, please contact the office (503-431-4800 or tualatinoffice@ttsd.k12.or.us) for guidance. It is also important for us to know this information so we can track any outbreaks at the school or classroom level so we may keep students safe.

Please monitor your child for any signs of illness including:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue

Here are some important steps to take to keep you, your child, and others healthy:

  • Keep children who are sick or are waiting for the results of a COVID-19 test at home. Don’t send them to school, athletic practices, or other activities.

  • Get vaccinated. See the links below for more information.

  • Wear a mask.

  • Wash hands with soap and water.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow.

  • Seek medical advice.

SPECIAL PARKING NOTE

We have designated disability parking spaces in our front and back parking lots. Lately, vehicles with no visible disability parking permit are using those spaces during afternoon pickup. One of our families has been unable to access these spots because of this. We ask that you leave those spots open all day for our families who need them. It is unlawful for anyone to park in a disability parking spot without a conspicuously placed parking permit. Thanks for modeling respectful behavior to our students.
