Hawlemont News
August 2021
From the Principal
And just like that it is the middle of August! I hope that this finds you getting outside and enjoying the sunny weather we are finally getting. Included are some important dates and information about returning in the fall. For information specific about COVID-19 please see the Summer Superintendent Update.
In the list of important events below you will see intake meetings. These are meetings for you to meet with your child's teacher. Communication between home and school plays such an important part in your child's education.
We still have open positions at Hawlemont. A huge thank you to Bridget Lilly (1st grade) and Olivia Baron (Preschool) for all there work at Hawlemont. We wish them the best! We are working on interviewing candidates this week. We have one more paraprofessional position open as well as a part time counsellor position. Please spread the word and have people apply to Karen Totman (ktotman@mtrsd.org).
Best,
Mrs. Rodriguez

Support for Hawlemont Students
- We are implementing a new literacy curriculum in grades k-6.
- We developed a WIN block for students this past year that we will continue moving forward. WIN stands for "What I Need". During this time students work on literacy skills they need to strengthen. We have worked with an outside literacy consultant to develop this block. These groups will be geared toward what your child needs from intense support to extension activities to everything in between.
- We also have a math interventionist position that we will have to support our students in math as well as the return of our reading specialist. These positions work with students that school teams identify need additional support.
- In addition to the reading specialist, we have received a grant that will provide Hawlemont with a literacy tutor. Depending on staff availability of the grant we could possibly have 2. The tutor will assess and work with students based on assessments.
- Literacy - The Instructional Leadership Team (ILT previously Leadership Team) will continue to plan and present various topics around literacy. We also have a team of teachers that is doing a workshop to share out what they learned in a professional development workshop on our new curriculum.
- Math - We are part of an Academy which allows all teachers to the course they need based on their grade level. These courses are free for our staff.
- Culturally Responsive Practices Leadership Academy - A group of staff made up of teachers and staff from Mohawk Trail and Hawlemont will participate in the academy brought to us through The Departments of Education.
