Parent Newsletter December 2019
Note from the Principal
As we end 2019, I would like to thank you for your commitment to IKCA and to the belief in our core values and education program. The success we have experienced since the opening of the school year owes a great deal to parents/caregivers and families like yours.
We believe in the importance of family traditions and holidays, and sharing them with one another at school. We welcome all families to our annual Holiday’s Around the World on December 17th where students learn about foreign countries and their winter traditions. It is a time of togetherness, learning and fun.
I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. School is closed beginning December 24the and 25th and January 1. Hours on open days is 8am-12 noon. During winter break there will be a myriad of opportunities to create a stronger bond with your child (ren) and continue to support their academic growth and success. The holidays are good times for story telling around the dinner table or routines like bedtime reading that cultivate connections between home and school expectations. Young students do best with regular schedules, and I encourage you to prepare for their return to school on January 7th by instilling in them an understanding about the importance of being rested and ready to learn.
Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year from our IKCA family to yours.

Find the Right Book Gift
Use Scholastic's Book Wizard to help encourage reading with just the right gift.
When I was a child, my Godfather gave me the complete set of Narnia books. I never got into them. In fact, I don't think I even took them out of the box. I had just finished reading Anne of Green Gables and was eager to read more about strong girls set in real historical times. The gift was well intentioned but wasted.
Giving children books as gifts is a great way to promote reading. Not only are you putting a new book into their hands, but you are also saying, "reading is special" when you wrap up a book and give it with love. There's just one catch: The book has to interest them enough to open it.
I made the following "cheat sheet" of popular children's chapter books using Scholastic's completely awesome Book Wizard tool, using the BookAlike option. I typed in a title my kids like, and received a list of books similar to that title. You can search for books using different criteria such as reading level, grade level, and subject matter.
