Using Current Events to Teach Social Studies, Writing, and Group Collaboration
In 5th Grade, Ms. Brouhard spent Friday having students think about electing our own student council representatives at Glenview. Students generated ideas of what makes an effective representative. They then voted on these attributes and narrowed them down to determine the top 10. Linking current events to national events, helps students make meaning of both the content we teach them and the real world events that they are hearing about.

Wednesday PD This Week: Reading
Cycle #3: Reading ends this Wednesday!
The Professional Development on Wednesday, January 25, marks the end of the Reading Cycle. For this PD's performance piece, we ask that everyone present something of which they are most proud from their teaching experience during Cycle #3. It could be something that their student's produced, or something that demonstrates a shift in their teaching practice. Please bring in artifacts to present (student work, a teaching strategy, etc.). You can present as a whole team or as an individual.
Included in Wednesday's PD will be an opportunity for peer sharing of the observations of Reading Workshop.
Also, we will close out this cycle with food and drink, so please bring a food item or beverage to share.
Many thanks to Ms. Bea Fowlkes for her tireless efforts in planning and preparing great PD presentations for Cycle #3: Reading.

Playworks at PTA
It was particularly noted that our staff's buy in and willingness to engage with the Playworks model through class game time, using Playworks games at PE, enforcing the Playworks model and strategies at recess, releasing Jr. Coaches to help during recesses, etc. is a huge contributor to the success of this program.
It was also shared the ways that when recesses are safe and fun, kids are better able to return to class able to learn and that instructional time is protected as teachers do not have to spend time de-escalating conflicts.
Because of our strong implementation, Playworks will be bringing a group to visit Glenview on 2/3 from 10-12 to see our "play" in action!
Buddies- Have them by 1/31
You need to have your cross grade level buddy meeting by 1/31. The tool of the month is Courage.
There are plenty of opportunities to discuss courage this month. You may want to link Courage to the upcoming Inauguration, to Black History Month, to the work of Dr. King, to introducing the history of the Black Panthers who began right in our neighborhood, to
