The Dragon's Tale
The Biweekly Newsletter of the Kaohsiung American School
2019-2020, Issue #17: May 25
Dear KAS Families,
Thank you for your continued efforts in keeping our school community safe. With your cooperation with our campus safety measures like frequent hand washing and disinfection, temperature checks and health monitoring, wearing masks, and other precautions, we are so happy for students to continue learning in classrooms. Let’s all make an extra effort to stay safe and healthy, and finish this school year strong!
We are pleased to announce that Rosa Li will serve as the President of the KAS Parent-Teacher Association in the upcoming 2020-21 school year. We are grateful to our current PTA President, Susana Yeh, for her leadership during this school year. Ms. Yeh and the PTA executive committee’s leadership, together with the efforts of the PTA, have made such a positive difference for KAS. In addition to the many events and support from earlier in the year, they have helped our entire community stay strong and united through the challenges we faced from COVID-19, and we are forever grateful. The official change of the PTA Presidents will take place at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year.
In recent weeks our high school students and parents have heard about our KAS Future Leaders Program, and the great opportunities this will provide for students. Please direct any inquiries to the Program Coordinator, Ms. Monica Su. She can be reached at msu@kas.tw.
Please note that school year 2020-21 school fee invoices will be brought home by students in the elementary school, and will be mailed by post for middle school and high school students by May 29. The invoices will include information about our new catering company for lunch, and those fees are now included in the school fees invoices as we previously did prior to 2017. As with this year, middle school and high school students must swipe their iPass cards to get lunch. The tuition payment deadline is July 15, and the deadline to apply for a new iPass card (if missing or broken) is July 31.
KAS READS with Summer Reading!
Parents, you know how important it is to read during the summer--there's even a name for the loss of reading skills that happens if children don't read, called the "Summer Slide". Studies show that students can lose up to 4 months of reading skills over the summer if they don't read any books. But the KAS Library is here to help! We provide access to over 60,000 eBooks, digital magazines and digital audiobooks, as well as a virtual summer reading program that your children can compete against their friends in to win virtual prizes and points for their school houses upon their return in August. There is even a way for you to manage all of your children's summer reading accounts in one place, to help you encourage and keep track of them (and you, too, can participate and model summer reading for your kids)!

International-mindedness is a multifaceted concept that captures a way of thinking, being and acting characterized by an openness to the world and a recognition of our deep interconnectedness to others.
To be open to the world, we need to understand it. IB programmes therefore provide students with opportunities for sustained inquiry into a range of local and global issues and ideas. This willingness to see beyond immediate situations and boundaries is essential as globalization and emerging technologies continue to blur traditional distinctions between the local, national and international.
An IB education fosters international-mindedness by helping students reflect on their own perspective, culture and identities, as well as those of others. By engaging with diverse beliefs, values and experiences, and by learning to think and collaborate across cultures and disciplines, IB learners gain the understanding necessary to make progress towards a more peaceful world.
International-mindedness is also encouraged through a focus on global engagement and meaningful service with the community. These elements challenge students to critically consider power and privilege, and to recognize that they hold this planet and its resources in trust for future generations. They also highlight the focus on action in all IB programmes: a focus on moving beyond awareness and understanding to engagement, action and bringing about meaningful change to make a more peaceful and sustainable world for everyone.
