Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview families,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable, weekend. It had a little something for anyone's favorite season--rain, snow, and sun! If you enjoy getting outdoors with your family, please consider participating in Riverview Elementary's first ever charity run/walk event on April 30, co-sponsored with the PTA! Help Riverview Elementary students bring clean water to South Sudan! See flyer information further down in this newsletter.

As we move into April, our process for class placement for the next school year will begin shortly. Because student-teacher fit and classroom dynamics are an important part of a student's ability to learn and grow, appropriate class placement is very important to staff and parents alike. I want to share with you the process we utilize in order to create each class as a place where all students can become empowered to meet their full potential.
Class lists are created to be optimal learning environments based on several factors. In the late spring, current grade classroom teachers, building learning specialists, the counselor, school improvement specialist, and principal will meet to discuss student needs. In order to create a balanced classroom, we want to have an even mix of boys and girls, a range of learning abilities and interests, compatible student personalities, and be as equal as possible in terms of overall numbers.
Parent input into this process is certainly welcome, because parents are at times able to share information about their child that we might not already know. This might be information about a situation outside of school which might impact your child’s learning or social-emotional well-being. Or, you may wish to share information about your child’s learning style, academic strengths, or social needs. This information assists us in placing each child in the classroom that suits him/her best.
I would like to ask that you please refrain from requesting any specific teacher by name. There are several reasons for this. Staff changes will occur, which can prevent placing your student in a specific room. Accepting requests for specific teachers from the bulk of our parents would make assigning students to classes very difficult, if not impossible. Further, there may be multiple requests from families for children to be in the same classroom, yet this could create a situation that is not conducive to learning for all students in the classroom. We are confident in the skill and the dedication of each of our teachers as they work to meet the needs of each and every student placed in their classrooms. They work as teams in their planning, review of data, and decision making.
If you feel you need to provide input for classroom placement needs, this needs to be submitted to me in writing, either through email (bmildren@usd232.org) or hard copy please by Sunday, April 10. This is the best way to ensure that your input is received and considered. Based on our internal timelines for the placement process, April 12 will be the final date that I am able to accept parent input regarding student placement for next year.
If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact me; I am always happy to discuss any matter related to your child’s education and well being with you!
Make it a great week!
Beth Mildren
Community Service Logs Due April 10th...
Dear Parents,
Community service hours are due to Ms. Munsey no later than April 10th, 2016.
Community service hours should be tallied from April 1, 2015, to April 1, 2016. If additional forms are needed please email me at tthurmanmunsey@usd232.org or see attached form.
Those students who reach the goal of 50 hours will be honored at an assembly next May. Students who fulfill this goal will receive a bronze pin and certificate from the President of the United States. Students who achieve 75 hours will receive a silver pin, and the gold pin is awarded for 100 hours. Students who achieve 10 hours will also be recognized here at Riverview.
The definition of service under the President’s program is quite broad and basically includes any activity that has a significant impact on meeting the needs of the community. Services that are paid for or carried out for a family member do not count towards service hours. Some examples of services that would count include helping with community organizations, school-based programs, scouting service or any effort to help others.
Students and parents may also track their service hours through the following website: www.presidentialserviceawards.org. If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 441-0808. There is also a list of suggested activities on the back of this letter. I would also love to receive pictures of our Falcons in action. Thank you so much for your support.

Tech Talk: Riverview's Technology Integration Team
In the Discovery Room we are able to utilize technology in many different ways. When we provide individualized instruction for each student or group of students we look at the different ways we can incorporate our iPads and laptops to increase the effectiveness of instruction. One of the ways we incorporate technology is through accessing websites to help re-teach or extend classroom instruction. We also utilize the iPads for extended practice with key concepts. We also collaborate with classroom teachers for the use of Google Classroom, Moby Max, and other online curriculum to meet the individual needs of students.
