Heri za Kwanzaa (Happy Kwanzaa!)
A Message from Carl Rush, Equity and Community Engagement Coordinator
This year has been a challenging year. Forcing most people to adapt to “new realities”. What makes me optimistic is seeing that people are capable not only to adapt but to thrive on change. Each year Kwanzaa provides us with a special and unique time to see and celebrate ourselves as people in beautiful, uplifting and liberating ways.
Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration which is observed from December 26th through January 1st and is celebrated by people of all faith backgrounds, since it's not tied to any religion. The word Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” or first fruits, referring to the agricultural harvest festivals that are found throughout Africa, according to Kelly Navies, specialist of oral histories for the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Celebrated predominantly in African American and Pan African communities around the globe, Kwanzaa is anchored by seven principles known as the Nguzo Saba which aims to inspire Black people to be united, self-determined, accountable for their communities, financially invested in Black-owned businesses, purposeful with their lives, creative and full of faith. It is important to remember that although the celebrations focus primarily on
Black communities, other ethnicities and races are welcome to participate in the rituals much like people other than Mexicans/Mexican-Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Finally, the seven candles (mishumaa saba) remind participants of the seven principles and the colors in flags of African liberation movements consisting of three (3) red candles, one (1) black candle, and three (3) green candles.
Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday, not a religious holiday, that can be celebrated alongside other major religious and secular holidays. Therefore, several students and families celebrate both Christmas and Kwanzaa.
Please visit WPS Equity Commitment for more information.
To our students, staff, and families that celebrate, Heri za Kwanzaa (Happy Kwanzaa)!
