"IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL" ARTICLE
Preparing for the Future at CMS
Submitted by: Jennifer Paschall, Clinton Middle School Principal
Time flies, it is only February and we are already beginning to make preparations for next school year. Our 8th grade students will begin to meet with high school counselors in a few days, begin developing their 4-year plans for high school, and before you know it our middle schoolers will be in high school. I wonder, am I ready for them to leave CMS? Are they prepared to leave? How can they be old enough to leave us? If you were to ask any of these students, they would tell you, "I am ready to go, I am prepared, I can’t wait to be in high school".
My hope for our middle school students is that they take time to savor their experiences in middle school. It is a one of a kind moment in their lives, transitioning from elementary to the independence of high school. Learning about themselves, what really interests them, what they might really want to do “when they grow up”. My advice to them—slow down, be involved in as many opportunities as you can, find out what does interest you, and what you are great at, and most importantly—have fun!
During the next week, our 8th graders will meet with their high school counselor during Social Studies to learn about the course opportunities in high school. The counselor will be back again the week of March 12th to help develop their 4-year high school plan. Important discussions between parents and students should take place during this time; What is your long term goal? Are you college bound, is tech school an opportunity for you, or are you bound for the military out of high school? These conversations will help students in determining their course selections throughout high school.
Our 6th and 7th grade students will also have an opportunity to look at which elective courses they might be interested in signing up for during Parent Teacher Conferences held on March 15th. Mrs. Vaughn, school counselor, will have computers and instructions available in the library for students to make course selections for the 2018-2019 school year.
Before you know it, we will be celebrating the end of another great school year. Slow down, take a breath, and enjoy every minute of this year. As my favorite movie character, Ferris Bueller, said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
