Principal's Message

Sterling families,

You are doing a wonderful job partnering with us as we work to offer every student a high quality education in a virtual environment. As a reminder, students should be prepared with their computers on and in the designated Google Meet by 8 a.m. each day, Monday through Friday. Please support us in starting the school day on time with all of our children present.

As you saw in the message from our superintendent, Dr. Williams, our students in grades K-2 whose families selected the hybrid model of instruction will return to school the week of October 27. In addition to hybrid students in grades K-2, students in grades 3-5 who are level 1 EL students will also return the week of October 27. This approach will focus primarily on English language acquisition and the development of literacy skills to support English learners.

We anticipate more information being shared from the school division soon. Thank you for your continued flexibility and support!

MAP Testing

Dear Sterling Elementary Families,

LCPS is invested in helping students access rigorous instruction during the 2020-2021 school year; therefore, identifying students’ instructional readiness levels as early as possible is an essential requirement. Sterling Elementary will administer NWEA’s MAP Reading and Math Growth assessments to students in grades 2-5.

  • Learn more about the test, see the school schedule, and learn how to help your child prepare for the Sterling Elementary MAP Testing Guide

  • Your child’s teacher will send an email with specific times for the test administration and log in information.

  • We encourage you to review the testing schedule that outlines dates and times grade levels will test and the following parent tools to support your child with testing at home.

  • Your child will need help ensuring that their device is properly set up. Directions for helping are on the Sterling Elementary MAP Testing Guide

Testing Environment:

We encourage you to find a quiet location away from distractions for your child during the testing session. If you have more than one child in the home, provide them with a separate location to avoid any possible distractions. If your child needs a break, please have them share with the teacher/proctor in the chat feature in google meet that they need a break.

Parent Support During Testing:

Support from you as the parent may be necessary for your child to successfully access and navigate the test. Your child’s Chromebook needs to be set-up to work properly. The instructions for set-up are available at The most common issue is setting the Screen Resolution. There is a great video on how to adjust this at

It is important that we gather accurate assessments of students’ strengths and areas of need for guiding personalized instruction. For the 2020-21 school year, MAP will not be utilized for Math placement. Therefore, we ask you to help your student engage in the tests as authentically as possible without any assistance.

Details on the MAP assessment is available on the LCPS website at

Thank you very much for your support!

Book Bus

The Sterling Elementary School Book Bus began rolling on September 21 and will continue making its rounds on Monday mornings. It's a great opportunity for Sterling students to once again get their hands on school library books, and we have been busy showing students how they can utilize this service.
