Oriole Flight - May 19th
Oriole flight is an annual event at AMS South to promote physical fitness and school spirit. The last week of each school year we have a 5k run/walk and a field day. This year, we are transporting students to the Avon Town Hall to use their course. We are planning this event for Friday, May 19th. The actual race will take place between 10:00a.m. and 1:00p.m. Students can bring a sack lunch that day or have the school prepare one for them.
We will need parent volunteers to help us monitor the check points along the route and to man the water stations.
If you are willing to help, please send an email Mr. Rodgers at: gdrodgers@avon-schools.org
Parent Volunteer Information
All school volunteers are required to have a completed background check through Safe Visitor. Please contact Michele Retzak in the South office (544-5700) to see if you have a background check in our system that is valid for this event. If you do not have a current background check on file, please follow the process outlined below to get a background check in place before this event. This process will take a small amount of your time and you will need to pay a $12.95 fee to conduct the background check.
Please complete this process before Friday, May 12, 2023, to have a realistic chance for your background check to be approved before the event the next Friday. Please let us know if you plan to help during the 5K by sending Michele Retzak an email message. meretzak@avon-schools.org
How do I get approved to be a School Volunteer?
https://www.avon-schools.org/services/safety/school-volunteers
- Select this link above to start the Volunteer Background Check.

- Selecting that link will open a Microsoft form that you must complete to gain access to the Safe Visitor Volunteer Background Application.
- Follow the directions provided on the Safe Visitor webpage using the link from the previous step. Submitting your information and paying the background check will begin the process that will most likely take two business days.
- Please pay attention to the email address you provide Safe Visitor for this background check. If you have lived out of state in the past you may need to pay an additional fee. The background check is sometimes hung up waiting for you to respond to an email.
- You will receive an email from Safe Visitor when your background check is complete and approved.
- We will be able to find you in our Safe Visitor system here at South once this process is complete.
8th Grade Cookout - May 26th
The annual 8th grade cookout is our way of sending off the students to high school on a high note. To pull this cookout off, we need parent volunteers who don’t mind doing a little grilling. We also ask willing parents to donate chips, drinks, veggies, condiments, and desserts. The date of the cookout is Friday, May 26th. We will host a meeting for volunteers to plan the event.

Education, Adventure, and Culture in Ecuador!
A group of students, parents, and teachers from Avon schools had the opportunity to travel to Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands over spring break, along with Spanish teachers Susi Clark (AMS North) and Holly Barker (AMS South). The group of 40 traveled to Ecuador with EF Tours and spent 9 days touring the Andean capital of Quito, and the Galapagos islands. Highlights of the tour included visiting the equator and participating in different activities to feel the gravitational force at the equator, touring the old city and beautiful churches, visiting a local artisan market in Otavalo, hiking to a waterfall, and attending a traditional dance ceremony while on the mainland. Students and teachers also traveled to three different Galapagos Islands during their trip. They snorkeled, hiked, visited a tortoise breeding center and sanctuary, relaxed on the beach, and saw many animals up close including lots of sea lions, Galapagos penguins, blue footed boobies, sea turtles, tortoises, birds, and fishes.
Holly Barker and Susi Clark are veteran teachers who enjoy partnering with EF Tours to offer an educational student tour to Latin America annually. Enrollment is open with just a few spots left for their trip to Peru in June 2024, and sign-ups for the student tour to Costa Rica in March 2025 will open in May. If you’d like more information about these tours, please contact the Spanish teacher at your respective building.
*These educational opportunities are not school sponsored.

Media Moments with Ms. Sever

Ms. Sever
April is Arab American Heritage Month. In the library and on Sora, we have a variety of books written by Arab authors and featuring Arab characters and cultures. In honor of this celebration, I wanted to highlight When Stars are Scattered, a middle grade graphic novel, by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed.
A National Book Award Finalist, this remarkable graphic novel is about growing up in a refugee camp, as told by a former Somali refugee.
Omar and his younger brother, Hassan, have spent most of their lives in Dadaab, a refugee camp in Kenya. Life is hard there: never enough food, achingly dull, and without access to the medical care Omar knows his nonverbal brother needs. So, when Omar has the opportunity to go to school, he knows it might be a chance to change their future . . . but it would also mean leaving his brother, the only family member he has left, every day. – Blurb courtesy of Penguin Random House
To learn more about Omar, Hassan, and their lives as Somali refugees, check out When Stars are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed from the AMS South Library or Sora!
OFFICE PROCEDURES
AMS South's Attendance Policy & Early Dismissal Proceedures
ABSENCE PROCEDURE
If a student is absent from school, the PARENT must call the school by 10:00 A.M. to report the absence. If no call is received, the automated school system will make an effort to contact the parent, but if NO PARENT CALL has been received by 3:00 P.M. the day following the absence, the student will be charged with an unexcused absence. You may also send an email to us to notify us of your child's absence at msattendance@avon-schools.org.
EARLY DISMISSALS
** Please be advised that we cannot take early dismissal information over the telephone. **
If your child needs to leave school early during the school day please send a note in with your child to bring to the office first thing in the morning or email us at
msattendance@avon-schools.org with all the necessary information: students name, date and time picking up, and the name of the person picking your child up if someone other than a parent or guardian will be picking up. This email will go directly to the front office secretaries and they will be able to get your child an early dismissal pass so that they can be in the front office when you are ready to pick them up. If you are unable to email us we will need you to come into the office with your valid ID, once we verify it is a parent/guardian picking up we will be able to call the student down for dismissal.
If someone other than a parent or guardian will be picking up your child we MUST have this information in writing from a parent/guardian. Please include his or her name on the note or email. Once we verify their photo ID then the student can sign out and leave.
If leaving early for a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, please provide verification note from the appointment to the main office to ensure that the absence is excused.
Using this email will ensure your child will get a pass out of class to be in the office. Please do not use Parent Square to send a message to your child's teachers as we cannot guarantee that this message will get to the front office to get your child a pass. Our teachers are very busy throughout the day and may not be able to check Parent Square often, or if the teacher is out that day we would not get that message in the front office in time to get your child an early dismissal pass.
We want to make sure that your information is getting to the right person in a timely manner, and hopefully prevent any miscommunication or missed messages.
Pre-Arranged Absences
It is our belief that students can best achieve academic success by being in school every day. We also understand that a student may occasionally have an opportunity to experience extraordinary opportunities that may result in a missed day of school. The principal or designee may grant a pre-arranged absence, if the absence provides an extraordinary opportunity for the student and/or family. The request must be submitted at least five school days in advance of the requested absence. The student will be required to complete all missed work upon his/her return to school.
No more than three days of pre-arranged absences will be approved each year. Pre-arranged absences may not be granted during the following circumstances:
- I-Learn
- During semester exams
- When the requested absence would push the student’s attendance record into excessive absence status or if the student has surpassed the allowable number of absences.
AMS South Visitors Policy
For Visitors to our Building
Avon Schools require all visitors to check-in at the front office using our visitor management system, Safe Visitor. This system requires visitors to scan their driver's license or state identification card for a check of their record. A temporary badge is provided to all visitors to wear while in our buildings. As our visitors leave school, they scan and return that badge to front office staff.
Entering the Building
Anyone entering our building beyond the front office will need to have a valid photo ID with them so that they can be checked in through our Safe Visitor Solutions system. You will be given a badge to wear while in the building so that you are identified as a visitor. When leaving you will return to the front office so that we can check you out of Safe Visitor Solutions and take your badge.
Visiting Students during Lunch
At this time, we are allowing parents/guardians to have lunch with their child during their specified lunch time in our commons area outside of the cafeteria. Parents must follow our policy for entering our building listed above; present a valid photo ID and be checked into our Safe Visitor system. Please take note that this process may take a few minutes to get you checked into our system so please allow for a few extra minutes for that process.
**If someone other than a parent/guardian would like to have lunch with your student, we MUST have that information in writing in advance from a parent/guardian. You can either send a note in with your student to bring to the office when they arrive at school in the morning, or you can email our attendance line with the information at msattendance@avon-schools.org
BUILDING ACCESS
Please be prepared to identify yourself, provide a valid photo ID, and provide a reason for your visit when you arrive. Thank you for your patience in adapting to the updated and more secure system.
