WMS Core Class & Assessment Updates

Social Studies

  • 6th: This week students have been working on a research project over a country of their choice. Next week students will begin exploring governments of the world. Students will have the opportunity to debate the effectiveness of various governments.
  • 7th: Texas History students are in the process of learning about the early days of the Texas Revolution, the key people and major battles. Students will have their exam on Friday, Jan. 21.
  • 8th: This week, students continued exploring the era of the Early Republic in US History as they examined the creation of America’s first political parties and the events that took place during John Adams’s presidency. Our test over this unit will take place next Wednesday, January 19.

RELA

  • 6th: Students will continue to read within their book clubs, and review character analysis, conflict and internal/external responses. Students will take their second fiction test on Wednesday the 19th.
  • 7th: This week students will continue their daily SSR and reading responses. The students will read and analyze “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street”
  • 8th: This week students will continue their daily SSR and reading responses. Students will take their first summative (covering drama) on Wednesday the 19th. We will finish the week with a grammar study over compound and complex sentences.

Science

  • 6th: 6th grade just wrapped up their balanced and unbalanced forces unit on Friday. Tuesday we will learn how to calculate speed! Science will look very much like math this week but we have a great hands-on lab that will get their blood pumping so that they can calculate their OWN speed.
  • 7th: 7th grade science students will be finishing up their mini-body projects. We will also start our prep on dissection safety rules and procedures to prepare for our upcoming Frog Dissections. We are looking for boxed gloves so if you have some that you would like to donate, send them our way.
  • 8th: 8th grade science will be learning about Newton’s Laws with demos and hands-on activities. There will be a TEST Friday, January 21st. This will be our first test for the marking period. We will be building Mousetrap Cars at the end of the month. Students will need to bring materials from home. Here the materials needed: A roll of duct tape, 6 CDs (used or new), 1 mouse trap and cardboard pieces (1 moving box should be enough). This is a very exciting in class project and we are looking forward to seeing their creations!

Math

Math: Take advantage of tutorials and be sure to let your teacher know if you are needing additional support in class.

  • 6th: All students will have a test on Tuesday January 18th then move into the Equations/Expressions unit.
  • 7th: On Level Students are wrapping up the Linear Representations with a test on Thursday January 20th then move into the 2D Geometry Unit. Advanced Students will take their Surface Area test on Thursday January 20th as well then move into the Volume unit where they will be assigned a fun project.
  • 8th: On Level Students are learning about Angle Relationships in addition to Pythagorean Theorem on a Coordinate Grid.
  • Algebra I: students have a test on Thursday January 20th and then will move into their Polynomials Unit.

UIL Activities, Rosebuds, AVID, STUCO, & Athletics

WMS Theater Department

  • Zone UIL Contest will be on Friday, January 21, at KPark. WMS performs 3rd @ 3pm. Friends and families are invited to support WMS. Friends and families may also watch other schools. The contest begins @ 1pm.

  • Students registered for Intro to Theatre, Theatre 1, and/or Tech Theatre for the Spring 2022 semester have a supply fee of $22 that will need to be paid via RevTrak. The link is not live yet, but will be shared asap.
  • Students in these classes need to bring a notebook dedicated to their theatre class only BY MONDAY. They are also being asked to donate a box of tissues OR a bottle of hand sanitizer for the classroom. (More info will be sent via email this week.)

Dance

The Lionettes Dance Team have entered their competition season. This year the team will be competing with a jazz dance, hip hop dance, and a pom dance. The Lionette Dance Officers will be competing in the dance officer division with a jazz dance, a lyrical dance, and a contemporary dance. Also the Lionettes will have several soloists and a duet competing.

Lionettes Dance Team Tryouts for the 2022-2023 School Year will be held during the week of

WMS Dance Classes


  • The WMS Dance Classes will begin this semester exploring their Jazz Dance Unit. Which will include the history, vocabulary, technique, and the various styles of jazz.

Band

We will be taking Band Portraits during classes on Wednesday January 19th. We will be sending home order forms Friday January 14th during classes. You may also order online using the following link www.buymyphotos.net. We ask ALL students to take pictures even if you are not going to purchase, there will be a large group composite made off the entire Band Program.


Concert, Symphonic, and Honors Band students are working on Solos for our Solo Contest held Tuesday Feb 1st during Band Classes.

Please mark your Calendars Pre-UIL for Symphonic and Concert Band is Saturday March 5th at Kingwood High School. Parents are highly encouraged to attend this event.


Honors Band and Chamber Orchestra are getting ready for Full Orchestra UIL and we will have a few evening rehearsals, these dates and times will be sent home soon.


Spring Trip information for ALL Band students will be sent home by the end of January. 7th & 8th graders will be going to Six Flags in SanAntonio Monday May 23rd and our 6th Graders will be attending the Big Rivers Water Park in New Caney Wednesday May 25th.

Orchestra


  • Friday, January 21st is the trip to the Houston Symphony for the UIL Groups. Students who have signed up owe $10 online or cash/check to Booster Club.

  • Tuesday, January 25th is the FYO Houston Symphony trip. We leave at 8 AM, and it will happen during the school day. All students are attending!

  • Congrats to all the FYO students who have earned their white belt! Yellow belt is coming January 24th.

WMS Campus Procedure Reminders

EARLY PARENT PICK-UP

If you are planning to pick-up your child early, you must do so BEFORE 3:15 PM. You must have an administrators' approval if you are in need of picking up your child after the 3:15 PM cut-off time.

WMS Pick-Up & Drop-Off

Please be sure that all before and after school student pick-ups and drop-offs occur in the front of the school. The bus ramp area is for buses and transportation service vehicles only.

Morning Wandering & Tardy Consequences

In efforts to deter student wandering in the mornings, we will us a systematic consequence approach. We will follow the consequences as outlined below:


  1. Warning
  2. Assigned Lunch D-Hall
  3. Assigned After School D-Hall
  4. Assigned After School Extended D-Hall
  5. Assigned After School Extended D-Hall...Also, other consequences may be assigned by the grade level assistant principal.


Below are the consequences that will be assigned for tardies:


  • 1st & 2nd Tardy: Warnings
  • 3rd & 4th Tardy: Parent Phone Call & After-School Detention
  • 5th & 6th Tardy: Parent Conference & Thursday Class Assigned
  • 7th+ Tardy: ISS Assigned and Intervention Planned w/Parents

**All tardies will be cleared at the conclusion of each 9-week grading period**

STUDENT IDs

Reminder that all students must wear a student ID at all times throughout the school day.

WMS CELL PHONE POLICY

Cell phones must not be visible during school hours unless they are being used in the classroom for instructional purposes, as determined by the teacher.


  • 1st Offense: Parent will be contacted & the phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day.
  • 2nd Offense: Parent will be contacted & the phone will ONLY be returned to the parent.
  • 3rd Offense: Parent will be contacted, the phone will ONLY be returned to a parent/guardian, & ISS will be assigned to the student.
  • 4th Offense: Parent will be contacted, cell phone will be checked-in daily & returned to the student at the end of the school day.
