6th Grade Updates and Reminders 9/26-9/30
- Thanks to all the families that attended, volunteered, or contributed to the Ram Family Fun Fest last Saturday. A good time was had by all and we raised a significant amount of money for our school!
- Chromebooks should be charged every night to ensure the battery lasts throughout the day!
- Water bottles should be stored in lockers at all time. Students can ask to get a drink if they are thirsty, but with our new Chromebooks, water bottles are not allowed in the classroom.
- Check Skyward and the homework calendar frequently for missing and current homework assignments, talk to your child about their work.
- Please remember that although you can email your students, absences and early pick-up information must be reported through the office. Please call the Yorkville School office.

We finished up our lit circle books this week. They all seemed to like the books they chose. We will begin reading our first in class novel, Freak the Mighty next week. They will have a packet of comprehension questions, charts and pictures to draw dealing with this novel. Such a great book!
The 6th grade also studied nouns this week and should be able to identify various types of nouns. They took notes, did a whiteboard review and will have a quiz on nouns next week.
They completed Spelling-Unit 3 working with words with the long and short “i” sound. Next week they will work with words that have the short and long “o” sound. We also had a friendly competition of who can say the list of spelling words the faster. It builds great fluency and is super fun to watch!
Have a great weekend! Happy October!

This week in Math, the sixth graders reviewed GCF and LCM by learning a new dance. Ask them if they can show you! Then we took the Module 2 Quiz and began work on Module 3. We reviewed how to convert mixed numbers and decimals into fractions. By the end of the week, we learned what a rational number is and how to classify them using a Venn Diagram.
Next week we will continue our work with rational numbers by identifying their opposites and absolute value, as well as ordering them. We will finish Module 3 and take the quiz and begin studying for the Unit 1 Test! Unit 2 will be on to work with fractions and decimals!
Have a great weekend!

In social studies we investigated some of the Native American cultures from around the time 1492. We looked at Native American groups that lived in different parts of North America and studied the changes in their diet and their housing as dictated by their location. We looked at several regions including: The Northern Peoples, Western Peoples, Southwestern Peoples, Plains Peoples, Eastern Peoples, and Southeastern Peoples. We ended the week by reviewing the chapter. The first chapter test will be next week Tuesday. They will have a study guide to help them prepare for the test. Have a great weekend.

This week the sixth graders started their fitness testing. We will be using the Fitnessgram to test the students three times this year--fall, winter, and spring. The students will determine if their scores are above, in, or below the healthy fitness zone for each category. The students were tested on the push up test, curl up test, and trunk lift test, which focused on their muscular strength and endurance. The students also played speedball and basketball when they were not testing. Have an active weekend!
