PK 4.3 - Weekly Newsletter
Our Rocks Study took a historic turn this week by having very interesting conversations about fossils and how they are formed. We also learned about the way people used to live in caves (which are basically huge rocks), how they used to communicate through cave paintings and hieroglyphics (or more like pretty drawings to us) and the way nature created some other rock formations like mountains and bridges to become the habitat of many living things.
During small groups, we made our very own fossils with air dry clay, practiced our math skills with ten frames and manipulatives (BEARS- that we had to bring back to their caves), made patterns, wrote our names in hieroglyphics and made rain sticks- an ancient musical instrument, with gravel and tiny rocks in them!
Reviewing and learning about the different types of rocks, turned into a fun and delicious hands-on experiment where we had the chance to explore how those have changed and formed throughout the years- We smashed chocolates with our fists to add a little pressure and turn them into metamorphic rocks, melted marshmallows so that they looked like hot lava and waited until they cool off and turn into igneous rocks and to make sedimentary rocks, we used Maria cookie crumbs and sugar to make layers of sediment that got squished together! Yumm
Next week, we will approach our Rocks Study by learning about how some rocks and minerals are very rare and special by being gemstones- where can we find them and how they can be used to make jewelry and other valuable items.
Objectives of the week:
- Uses number concepts and operations
- Compares and measures
- Demonstrates knowledge of patters
- Demonstrates knowledge of the alphabet
- Demonstrates phonological awareness
- Demonstrates knowledge of print and its uses
