Amelia's Early Life
Amelia and Her Sister
Amelia grew up in Atchison, Kansas with her younger sister Grace. The girls were considered tomboys, and were not the typical girls of that time. They even wore pants instead of dresses!
High School Graduation
Amelia was allowed to choose the high school she wanted to attend, so she looked for the one with the best science program. She graduated in 1916.
Red Cross Nurse's Aide
Amelia worked to help the soldiers wounded in World War I.
Learning to Fly
Amelia worked long hours at many jobs to save the $1000 required to take flying lessons. She became the 16th woman to be issued a pilot's license!
Amelia and Her Plane
Amelia cut her hair short and wore a leather jacket to fit in with the other pilots.
Amelia's Flying Gear
